Colgate Erases 17-point Deficit, Beats Griffs in OT

Raiders Defeat Canisius 61-55 After Strong Second Half

HAMILTON – The Colgate Women's Basketball team trailed by 17 points late in the first half Thursday night at Cotterell Court, then staged a massive comeback to stay undefeated with a 61-55 win in overtime over Canisius.

"It was all heart that our players displayed. That first half was not who we are at all, but we knew that. Their confidence stayed, they were tough and resilient, and we made big plays," said head coach Ganiyat Adeduntan after the win.

"At the end of the day you have to be able to make big plays and get defensive stops. We came out in the third, and our intensity was great. We talk about it every day in practice - you keep playing and keep fighting until the final buzzer sounds."

After the teams entered the halftime break with the Golden Griffins on top by a 34-19 margin, the Raiders opened the third quarter on a 14-4 run to quickly climb back into the game. Canisius fought back to take a 12-point lead early in the fourth quarter, but it was all Colgate after that.

The Raider defense held the visitors from Buffalo to just one field goal for the rest of regulation and ended the quarter on an 18-5 run, including the game-tying layup from Madison Schiller in the dying moments. After Schiller rebounded a missed Golden Griffin free throw, the Raiders called timeout to set up a play. Tiasia McMillan received the ball down low and backed her way in for an in-close shot that did not drop. Schiller jumped on the rebound and put it back up and in to tie the game at 51 with three seconds to play. Canisius was able to get a shot off with one second on the clock, but it clanked out to force overtime.

With momentum firmly on their side, the Raiders jumped out to a 59-51 lead in the extra session, including four straight points from McMillan to give Colgate its first lead since the 4:43 mark of the first quarter. Canisius dropped in a layup with 13 seconds to play to end an 8:26 drought from the field to make it a six-point game, but the Golden Griffins did not get any closer.

Sophia Diehl kept the visitors at bay in the overtime session, as she went 4-for-4 from the free throw line, with all of her attempts converted in the final minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Colgate's scoring depth was a key factor in the victory. Taylor Golembiewski (15), McMillan (14), Schiller (12) and Diehl (10) all finished in double figures, and six different players scored in either the fourth quarter or overtime.

A dominant second half team so far in the 2023-24 campaign, Colgate outscored the Golden Griffins 32-17 in the final 20 minutes and had a positive scoring margin in the third quarter for the third straight game. The Raiders have now outscored opponents by a 62-40 total in third quarter play.

Alexa Brodie contributed all over the scoresheet with six points to go with a career-high eight rebounds, two assists and a steal. Schiller also set a new career-high with 43 minutes played on the evening to lead all Raiders.

The last time Colgate won in overtime came last winter when it topped Bucknell by a 64-57 final in Lewisburg, Pa.

Colgate's three wins to begin the season is the best start since the 2019-20 campaign when the Raiders won five straight to open the year.
