Volleyball Caps Weekend with Sweep at Lafayette

Raiders Run Win Streak to 13 with 3-0 Road Victory

EASTON, Pa. – Colgate Volleyball picked up its fifth sweep in the last six matches and ran its winning streak to 13 with a 3-0 victory at Lafayette on Sunday afternoon at Kirby Sports Center.

The red-hot Raiders complete the first half of Patriot League play unbeaten (8-0). Six of Colgate's league victories have come by a sweep.

Abby Shadwick posted double-digit kills for the second time in 24 hours, leading the team with 11 on Sunday. Gillian Hauschild and Milan Bayless had eight kills apiece. Defensively, Sophie Thompson racked up five block assists and Rachael Martinez registered 21 digs.

"This was a very good way to finish the first half of the league," said head coach Ryan Baker. "We've had a lot of different players step up which we will need as we enter the second half. This team is a pleasure to coach and I look forward to getting back to work."

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1: Colgate 25, Lafayette 17
Colgate used a 4-0 run highlighted by a service ace from Taylor Cigna to build an 11-7 lead. The Raiders never trailed from there, extending their lead to 20-14 on the heels of back-to-back kills from Bayless. Lafayette's seven attack errors to Colgate's three made the difference. Hauschild paced the Raiders with three kills and Colgate secured the first set, 25-17.

Set 2: Colgate 25, Lafayette 20
The second set was a back-and-forth battle with both teams trading shots. Lafayette built a 12-9 lead before Colgate raced on a 4-0 run with kills from Shadwick and Hauschild surging the Raiders in front 13-12. The score was still a one-point margin, 21-20, before back-to-back blocks from Thompson sparked a 4-0 final surge to give Colgate the victory, 25-20.

Set 3: Colgate 25, Lafayette 23
Colgate climbed in front 13-10 on a kill from Hauschild to force a Lafayette timeout. The Leopards closed within 19-18 before the Raiders countered with back-to-back points. Kills from Shadwick and Hauschild gave Colgate match point, 24-20, but Lafayette didn't make it easy and cut the margin to 24-23 before another kill from Hauschild completed the sweep, 25-23.
