Colgate Completes Sweep at Holy Cross

Balanced Effort Fuels Friday Victory

WORCESTER, Mass. – Colgate Volleyball returned to its sweeping ways with a 3-0 victory over Holy Cross on Friday evening inside Holy Cross Field House.

Colgate's sixth Patriot League sweep keeps the Raiders atop the conference standings with a one-match lead over Army. The two teams square off Saturday night in West Point with both teams vying for a late-season push. Colgate swept the Black Knights Sept. 30 in Hamilton.

Libby Overmyer led the way with 12 kills, while Claire Dewine dished a team-best 19 assists in leading Colgate to a .287 hitting clip. Defensively, Sophie Thompson registered four blocks, Abby Shadwick added nine digs, and the Raiders held Holy Cross to a .248 hitting percentage.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1: Colgate 25, Holy Cross 20
Holy Cross raced out to a 13-7 lead before the Raiders found their footing. A service ace from Dewine sparked an impressive 13-1 Colgate burst, which included three service aces and two kills from Shadwick. The Crusaders erased a 22-15 deficit with a 5-0 surge before Colgate put the opening frame away with kills from Milan Bayless and Overmyer capping it off, 25-20.

Set 2: Colgate 25, Holy Cross 18
After a back-and-forth start to the second set, Colgate broke away from an 11-10 lead with a 6-1 run thanks to blocks from Thompson, Overmyer, and Gillian Hauschild. Two more kills down the stretch from Bayless and Overmyer, along with a service ace from Sydney Jones, helped Colgate pull away for the 25-18 set victory.

Set 3: Colgate 25, Holy Cross 22
The Crusaders opened an early 10-8 lead before Colgate countered with five straight points to take the lead for good. Kills from Hauschild and Shadwick ignited the run that gave the Raiders a 13-10 edge. The margin stayed at three points for most of the set with the two teams trading shots back and forth. Kills from Dewine, Overmyer, and Carlie Rzeszotarski sealed the frame and sweep, 25-22.
