HAMILTON — UMass Lowell and Colgate combined for six goals in the third period, but the River Hawks finished with the upper hand, defeating the Raiders 5-2 at the Class of 1965 Arena Saturday evening.
"I'm really proud of our team for battling through adversity this weekend. We will grow from this and it will certainly make us better prepared for league play in November," said head coach Mike Harder.
Ethan Manderville and
Levi Glasman both notched their first goals of the season for Colgate. The Raiders cut the deficit to one in the third before UMass Lowell notched two more goals to secure the 5-2 win.
Glasman made it a 3-2 game with 12:42 left in the third period.
Sebastian Tamburro tapped a loose puck to Glasman, and the senior skated in before ripping a shot from the right faceoff circle.
Manderville got Colgate on the board just under seven minutes into the final frame with a power play goal after the River Hawks got called for tripping.
Ryan McGuire played the puck across the ice to
Simon Labelle, who ripped one toward the goal that got redirected out in front by Manderville to make the score 3-1.
UMass Lowell's first goal came 12 minutes into the second courtesy of Owen Cole.
At the start of the third, the River Hawks scored two quick ones to take a 3-0 lead. Dillan Bentley found the back of the net 37 seconds into the period, and Cole followed that with his second of the contest a minute later.
UMass Lowell pushed its lead back to two at 4-2 with a power play goal from Nick Granowicz just over halfway through the final period. Granowicz then topped off the scoring, putting in an empty netter with six seconds remaining.
The Raiders outshot the River Hawks 10-7 in the opening period and had two power play opportunities, but they could not get anything going.
Andrew Takacs made his first start of the season, logging a career-best 25 saves. He stopped 16 shots in the second to shut down several UMass Lowell scoring chances, including six saves in 45 seconds at the start of the period.
