BURLINGTON, Vt. — Senior
Bronwen Rees-Wiedemann scored her first goal of the season, but the Raiders fell 5-1 at Vermont Sunday afternoon.
Rees-Wiedemann's goal came off a penalty corner with 5:42 remaining in the fourth.
Lauren Widdowson inserted it to the senior, who dribbled into the circle and ripped a shot past UVM's goalie to make it 5-1.
The Catamounts took a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the game when Lotte Kanters found the back of the cage. Vermont added two more in the second and another two in the third to pull ahead by five.
Colgate had a couple of other chances to reduce the deficit late in the fourth. The Raiders drew a penalty corner with 1:40 remaining, and
Ella Murphy fired one that the goalie deflected out of bounds. With under 10 seconds remaining,
Aaliyah Linfoot found space and dribbled into the circle before releasing a shot from a tough angle that got saved.
Murphy led Colgate with four shots, two of which were on target. With just under three minutes remaining in the first, she had one blocked by a defender. The senior then had a good look at the goal following a penalty corner with a minute and a half left, but she put it wide.
In the third, the Raiders got awarded their third corner. Murphy took a shot from about the mid-way point of the circle that the Catamounts' goalie laid out to stop.
Colgate had three defensive saves in the game, two of which came from
Abby Williams. In the first, Williams knocked one out of the air to deny the Catamounts. She then stopped another on the goal line in the second. The first-year now has a team-best four defensive saves this season.
Annie Lake also made a defensive save with just under four minutes left in the fourth to foil a Catamount chance. The Raiders held UVM scoreless in the final quarter, with goalie
Claire van Kempen stopping five shots. She finished with eight saves in the game.

Head Coach April Cornell-DeAngelis
"It was a tough test today against Vermont. They are a solid team and did a good job of shutting down our circle entries. We have been plagued with injuries this second half of the season and I'm really proud of the team for staying together and focusing on getting better and having fun at the same time. The score doesn't reflect what the team is capable of and we will keep working on the small pieces to putting together a full 60 minutes."
