SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Colgate scored a goal in each of the first two periods as the Raiders held on to defeat Union 2-1 Saturday.
Matt Verboon opened the scoring with four and a half minutes remaining in the first.
Ross Mitton passed to
Alex DiPaolo, who played the puck to Verboon. The senior wrapped around the goalie and tapped in a shot to make it 1-0.
Colgate killed off a Union power play early in the game after Mitton got sent to the box for interference. The Raiders also had an additional power play chance in the opening 20 minutes that they had numerous scoring chances during but could not capitalize.
Carter Gylander made seven stops in the first, keeping the Dutchmen off the scoreboard.
Alex Young doubled the Raiders' lead two minutes into the second.
Nic Belpedio played the puck to
Ryan McGuire, who passed to Young. The junior fired an initial shot that got saved before McGuire picked the puck up and played it back to Young as he ripped a shot in from behind the right faceoff circle.
Three minutes later, Union cut the lead back to one at 2-1 when Nate Hanley found the back of the net off passes from Nathan Kelly and Josh Nixon.
The Raiders killed off two more penalties in the second, including a five-minute major that spilled over into the third. Gylander continued to hold strong in goal during the five-minute penalty, stopping shot after shot that the Dutchmen threw at him.
The third period saw more back-and-forth action, but neither side was able to put one in. Colgate outshot Union 11-9 in the final period as the Raiders finished with a 33-26 advantage. Gylander also made nine more stops in the last 20, totaling 25 saves on the night.

Head Coach Don Vaughan
"I mean as much as I didn't think we competed last night enough to win a game, we did that and then some tonight. I was really pleased with our effort. Our energy level from the beginning of the game was dramatically different than last night, and we were able to sustain that. I'm proud of the guys for the way they bounced back from last night's disappointing loss.
You know, clearly, killing off the five-minute major was huge. I have to give
Chris Azzano a lot of credit, he does a great job with our penalty kill guys. At the end of the night, that was probably the difference."
