Colgate Sinks Navy, 64-34

Colgate beats Navy for the first time since 2020

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Colgate women's basketball won their second straight Patriot League game on the road after defeating Navy 64-34. The win snaps a four-game skid against the Mids, with the Raiders' last win coming from the 2019-2020 season.

Four Raiders scored in the double figures to help Colgate top Navy by 30 points. Sophomore Morgan McMahon led the charge with 15 points, followed by Taylor Golembiewski, Jenna Paul, and Madison Schiller, all tallying 10.

Alexa Brodie opened the scoring with a layup and then a pair of free throws to have the Raiders up 4-0. Navy cut Brodie's run with a field goal, but sophomore Golembiewski responded right back for Colgate.

A foul on Colgate brought the Mids to the foul line shooting one to trail the Raiders 6-4. Back-to-back field goal from Tiasia McMillan extended Navy's deficit to six points. Navy broke up McMillan's run with a three-pointer, but freshman Christina Midgette closed the period with a jumper to bump Colgate's lead to 12-7.

Schiller kept the offense going to open the second period with a second-chance layup, but the Mids answered immediately with a jump shot. The Raiders then went on a 9-0 run as Jenna Paul completed a three-point play, and McMahon scored four points at the charity stripe to lead 23-9.

Colgate then made their fourth straight appearance at the foul line as Schiller scored a point that extended the run to 10 points. Navy finally broke up the Raiders' run with a field goal, but McMahon responded with back-to-back jumpers that brought Colgate's lead to 28-11.

Navy went on a 5-0 run that almost finished the first half before Brodie drained a buzzer-beating field goal that extended Colgate's lead to 30-16. McMahon, the Hagerstown, Md. native, scored 10-of-18 second-period Raider points.

Paul opened the second half with a second-chance layup to bump the lead to 16 points, but the Mids responded quickly with a jumper. Navy scored three more unanswered points to trail 32-21.

Not taking lightly to Navy's offensive spark, The Raiders went on 8-0 run to lead by 21 points. McMahon scored three points, Schiller scored the first Raider three-point field goal, and Paul scored her second field goal in the period during the run. Feeling the pressure, Navy went on a 4-0 run that cut their deficit to 40-25.

Colgate then scored six straight points after McMahon and freshman Lara Cook each scored a pair at the free throw line, with Cook adding in a layup to bring the Raider's lead to 46-25. The Mids ended their final possession of the third period at the charity stripe by scoring a point, with Colgate closing the period with a three-pointer to push the Raiders ahead 49-26. Colgate scored 19 points in the third period, with five points drawn from fouls.

Navy opened the final stanza with a field goal, but Golembiewski answered for Colgate with five straight points to push Navy further behind by 26 points. Golembiewski then scored a three-point play to lengthen Colgate's lead to 57-28.

The Raiders were then on an 11-0 run as junior Lindsay Blackmore scored her first basket and drew a foul to complete the three-point play. Navy finally broke their scoring lull with a 4-0 to cut Colgate's lead to 60-32. Schiller then scored back-to-back field goals with less than a minute left to push Navy further back by 32 points, with the Mids following with a jumper to close out the game.

Head Women's Basketball Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan

"It feels great to win two straight Patriot League games, and I'm really proud of our time right now. We talked about a certain level of intensity and focus, especially coming off a big win for our program against Lehigh. We needed to come out with the same intensity and focus we had in that game, and I felt like we did.

"It was great to see so many people contribute offensively, but ultimately, we won this game because of our defense.

"This is a tough stretch we are in right now. We're playing a game, getting two days off, then playing again, but it is a player's dream. I am all about it for them. We'll celebrate today, turn the page, rest tomorrow, and start talking about Army to get prepared for Sunday to compete again."

Colgate (8-6, 2-1 PL) returns to Hamilton on Sunday, Jan. 8, for a battle with the Black Knights. Tip-off against Army is slated for a 2 p.m. on Cotterell Court.
