Colgate Drops Contest to Holy Cross

Colgate falls for the first time at home in 2023

HAMILTON – The Raiders were bested at home for the first time in 2023, as Holy Cross overcame Colgate 59-49 on Kids Day.

The Crusaders shot over 50 percent from the field (51.2) and beyond the arc (62.5) to carry themselves to their seventh straight Patriot League win.

The Raiders opened the game with a 6-3 run as Madison Schiller, Tiasia McMillan, and Taylor Golembiewski scored field goals. Holy Cross broke up the run with a jumper to trail by a point, but senior Alexa Brodie scored a jumper for Colgate.

Both teams exchanged three-point field goals, with Sophia Diehl scoring the Raiders' first of the game. Brodie completed a three-point play, and Morgan McMahon went to the foul line to make a pair of free throws to bump Colgate's lead to 16-8.

The Crusaders scored back-to-back field goals to cut their deficit to four points to end the first. Diehl led the Raiders with five first-period points.

Holy Cross opened the second period at the charity stripe, scoring a point and then a field goal to trail by a point. McMahon finally got the Raiders on the board in the period after Golmembiewski stole the ball. Holy Cross answered with a layup to trail by one again. A foul on the Raiders allowed Holy Cross to tie the game at 18. Holy Cross drew another foul to take a one-point lead.

Golembiewski drove up the paint to take a two-pint Colgate lead, but four straight Holy Cross points gave the Crusaders a 23-20 lead. Freshman Nicole Parks sank a field goal to cut the deficit to one, but the Crusaders drew back-to-back fouls to score two points at the line to lead 25-22.

Lara Cook went to the charity stripe to score the last Raider point of the first half. Holy Cross drained one more basket to lead by four points to end the second period.

The Crusaders kept their hot streak to open the second half with a 4-2 run to lead 31-25. Schiller slashed up the run, but a foul on Colgate allowed Holy Cross to gain a point back to lead by five points.

Brodie and Golembiewski went on a 4-0 run to cut their deficit to one point. Holy Cross felt the pressure from the Raiders' run and responded with seven points to lead 39-31. Both teams exchanged baskets to put Holy Cross on top by nine points to end the third period. Brodie and Golembiewski once again scored four points for Colgate.

Golmbiewski opened the final stanza with a three-pointer to cut the Crusaders' lead to 44-38. Holy Cross scored three unanswered points right before both teams went scoreless for three minutes. Cook broke the scoring lull with a three-pointer to cut Colgate's deficit to six points. Holy Cross responded quickly with a field goal before Colgate went on a 6-3 run to trail 52-47. Cook and Jenna Paul scored a three-pointer apiece in the run.

With less than two minutes left, Holy Cross went on a 4-2 run to extend their lead to 56-49. The Crusaders drew two straight fouls to end the game at the charity stripe scoring three points. Five fourth-period three-pointers were scored, with four coming from the Raiders.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Women's Basketball Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan

"We started the game shooting the ball well, and then faltered as the game went on. There was good defensive energy from both teams, but they scored, and we could not. We were able to slow them down at some points throughout the game, but we were not able to get enough stops, especially in the fourth quarter.

"We keep talking about trying to get opportunities to create more possessions for ourselves, so it was good to see we scored ten second-chance points. We knew Holy Cross was going to defend us hard today, so we had to find other ways to put up points.

"It was nice to get Nicole back from injury to bring a lot of energy, enthusiasm, and hustle plays off the bench today. The more she gets in the flow and rhythm, the more we will see her on the court. She brings the energy we need and creates more possessions for us.
