Colgate Sweeps UMBC for First Win

Raiders Tops Retrievers in Los Angeles Finale

LOS ANGELES – Call it a Colgate sweep.

The Raiders bounced back from a tough opening day with a masterful 3-0 sweep of UMBC on Saturday evening at the Galen Center. Colgate comes home with its first win of the season against an NCAA tournament team that went a perfect 12-0 in the America East last year.

Colgate (1-2) posted a strong .270 hitting percentage while holding UMBC (1-2) to a .154 mark. Julia Kurowski picked up her second double-double with 34 assists and 12 digs to lead the Raiders on both sides. Libby Overmyer and Athena Leota combined for 24 kills, Abby Shadwick registered 13 digs, and Sophie Thompson netted a team-best two blocks on the night.

Set 1: Colgate 25, UMBC 19
UMBC scored the first three points and led by the same margin, 6-3, when the Raiders rallied for six of the next seven points. Three straight kills from Leota and Harper Snyder broke away from a 10-10 score and gave the Raiders the lead for good. Colgate built its lead to 20-16 and capped it off with an ace from Kurowski to secure the first set, 25-19.

Set 2: Colgate 28, UMBC 26
The Raiders survived three set points in a crazy second set. UMBC led 24-22 before a kill by Overmyer and an attack error tied things up at 24-all. The Raiders went in front 25-24, then trailed 26-25, before scoring the final three points. Kills by Overmyer and Leota gave the Raiders the lead before Thompson slammed it home to cap off the comeback, 28-26.

Set 3: Colgate 25, UMBC 20
The Retrievers opened a 10-7 lead before the Raiders mounted a furious 9-0 scoring run to take control of the set. Shadwick orchestrated the run with a pair of kills and a service ace while Thompson and Overmyer each added kills of their own. The two teams went point-for-point after Colgate established its 16-11 lead, and that would be the winning margin after an attack error capped off the 25-20 victory and match sweep for the Raiders.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Ryan Baker

"I was really happy with our response today. UMBC is a really well-coached and disciplined team and we fought hard. Our defensive intensity was exceptional and Julia set a really good match for us. This was a nice way to end a special west coast trip."
