HAMILTON, N.Y. – Loyola University rallied from two goals down with under four minutes to play and scored the game winner 2:05 into overtime to defeat Colgate 11-10 on the Raiders' Senior Day. The loss was the fifth one-goal loss of the season for the Raiders and the second time the team has lost in overtime.
Colgate broke an 8-8 tie with 8:07 remaining in regulation as
Brendan Jordan streaking down toward the left side of the cage took an assist from
Ben Trumble. The lead went to 10-8 on
Brian Minicus' third goal of the contest marking the eighth time this season he has scored three or more goals in a game. Loyola crept to within one with 3:05 remaining with the shot clock expiring and scored the equalizer with only 39 seconds left. Minicus had a shot to end the game on a breakaway, but fired the shot just wide as time expired.
The teams traded possessions in overtime with the game winner coming with 1:55 left in the first overtime session.
Loyola broke out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter before
Colin Ruppenstein brought the Raiders to within a goal with 4:16 left in the quarter. Loyola answered with a goal in the first minute of the second period, but a four-goal Colgate runover the course of 1:40 put the raiders up 5-3. First Trumble scored off an assist by
Brian Minicus with 11:54 left in the half.
Michael Minicus followed 43 seconds later with a helper by
Brendan Jordan.
Jack Turner then scored after taking a pass from
Thomas Colucci, and
Brian Minicus completed the string with an unassisted wrap-around tally. Loyola scored the last goal of the half leaving a 5-4 Raider halftime advantage.
Loyola completed a four-goal run of its own, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter. Colucci broke the Loyola string with an unassisted tally off a faceoff win. Trumble then scored off a Jordan assist and
Brian Minicus ended the third quarter scoring with an unassisted goal setting up the wild fourth quarter.
Colgate outshot Loyola 46-31 on the day, and had a 16-8 lead in faceoffs. In addition to his goal and assist, Colucci had 16 wins in 23 attempts at the faceoff dot and scooped a dozen ground balls. Raider goalie
Matt LaCombe made nine saves, while
Donny Gayhardt had a ground ball and two caused turnovers.
Prior to the game the Raiders honored the Class of '22 on Senior Day. In addition to
