LAKE PLACID, N.Y.— Griffin Lunn's goal in the second period was not enough for the Raiders to mount a comeback as Colgate fell 3-1 to Quinnipiac in the ECAC Hockey semifinals on Friday.
After
Arnaud Vachon was sent to the box the Bobcats struck first on the power play. Oliver Chau came out with the puck after a scrum along the boards on the right side. Chau skated in and passed across to Joey Cipollone who put a one-time shot past
Mitch Benson.
Quinnipiac doubled its lead with 2:17 remaining in the period when Michael Lombardi tipped in a shot on an offensive rush by the Bobcats.
Colgate had its fair share of chances in the opening period, including a shot by
Alex Young that hit off the post just over four minutes in. The Raiders also had a power play opportunity with 2:46 remaining in the period after the Bobcats were called for tripping,
but they could not get anything going.
Just over four minutes into the second, Lunn pulled Colgate back within one.
Ben Raymond blocked a Bobcats' shot then got free on a breakaway. Quinnipiac's goalie made a pad save on Raymond's shot but the puck bounced out to
Griffin Lunn who tapped it in.
Ross Mitton had a chance to equalize with 1:55 left in the second when he skated in on the right-hand side and ripped a shot that hit off the pipe.
In the third, Quinnipiac pushed its lead back to two with 10:14 remaining. Wyatt Bongiovanni picked up the puck along the right side then put in a shot from the faceoff circle.
Colgate outshot the Bobcats 11-7 in the final period but could not find the back of the net. The final shot total finished 33-26 in favor of Quinnipiac.
Benson had 30 stops in net, making it his ninth game this season with 30 or more saves.
Colgate finished the season with an 18-18-4 record.

Head Coach Don Vaughan
"I'm so proud of this team and how hard they competed. The last five to six weeks have been really fun. I thought we worked extremely hard again tonight against a team that's going to take advantage of mistakes. We made a couple of mistakes and they certainly capitalized on them. I'm overall just really proud of the way we worked."
