Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey | | Connor Griffin

Raiders Top No. 11/13 Cornell 3-2

Two Big Power Play Goals Helps Lead Colgate to Victory

HAMILTON, NY.— The Colgate men's hockey team scored a goal in each period to help the Raiders secure a 3-2 win over No. 11/13 Cornell at the Class of 1965 Arena on Friday.

In the first, neither side gained an advantage until Colgate pulled ahead with 1:14 remaining when Alex Young found brother Colton Young who beat the goalie five-hole. The Raiders went into the first intermission with a 9-6 advantage in shots.

It didn't take long for the Big Red to equalize in the second, as just eight seconds into it Kyle Bets won a faceoff that was redirected to Ondrej Psenicka who took it down the ice and finished a backhand shot into the net.

With just under 13 minutes remaining in the second, a shot by Ethan Manderville hit off the pads of the goalie and deflected to Griffin Lunn who one-timed a shot into the goal.

Cornell opened the third period similar to the previous one with another quick goal. Kyle Penney scored 54 seconds into it as he tied the game at 2-2.
With 12:30 remaining in the game Griffin Lunn passed to Jeff Stewart who skated in and took a shot that was saved but got redirected to Manderville whose one-timer found its way into the goal to give the Raiders a 3-2 lead.

Mitch Benson made 13 saves in the final period to give him a total of 27 on the night.

Colgate went 38-57 in faceoffs while the Big Red had the advantage in shots at 29-24.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Don Vaughan

"Now to me, that was a fun college hockey game. Both teams played hard and competed in a really honest way. Special teams and goaltending are often the difference in these games and tonight was no different. Assistant Coach Andy Boschetto has done a great job with our penalty-killing units and Mitch Benson was really in his game tonight. Our power play picked up two goals tonight and that was the difference. We know that Cornell will be ready tomorrow so it's rest up and go to battle tomorrow.
