WEST POINT, N.Y. – Colgate knocked down 15 triples on its way to triple digits with a 100-90 shootout victory over Army on Wednesday night at
Christl Arena.
The Raiders have now won eight consecutive games and clinched a top four seed to host the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Patriot League tournament.
Jack Ferguson led three 20-point scorers for the Raiders with 22 points while
Nelly Cummings and
Tucker Richardson each finished with 20.
Ryan
Moffatt (16) and
Oliver Lynch-Daniels (10) were also in double figures while
Jeff Woodward and
Sam Thomson scored eight and four, respectively.
Cummings swished a 3-pointer right off the opening tip and 18 of Colgate's first 20 points came from behind the arc. Richardson started 3-for-3 and Cummings and Lynch-Daniels each netted a pair inside the first nine minutes.
Moffatt hit his first long-range attempt before Richardson drained his fourth to put Colgate in front 35-21 with 9:30 showing on the clock. Colgate's 14-point lead was its largest of the game but Army kept coming.
An inside layup by Chris Mann started an 11-2 run for the home team which brought the margin to 37-32. It was still a five-point game when a jumper in the lane by
Jalen Rucker made it 46-41 with 1:40 left.
The deep-range shooting continued as Ferguson and
Moffatt swished back-to-back to give Colgate 11 for the half and stretch the lead to 52-43 at the break.
Moffatt's early layup in the second half brought the lead back to double digits and it remained a 10-point margin when a 3-pointer from Ferguson made it 71-61 with 10:56 left.
Army and its up-tempo offense kept shooting back with quick spurts but Colgate stayed an arms' length away through the final stages. The margin trimmed to five points on multiple occasions and eventually got to 83-79 after a 3-pointer from Rucker – who led five Black Knights in double figures with a game-high 29 points – with 5:18 showing.
That was as close as Army would get. Woodward and Thomson made some key plays in crunch time and Colgate closed it out with a late 11-2 run en route to the 100-90 victory.
Colgate connected on 56% from the field, 49% from the three-point line, and 87% from the free throw line in one of the Raiders' finest shooting performances of the season.
CUMMINGS REACHES 1,000-POINT MILESTONE
Nelly Cummings needed 15 points to reach 1,000 for his career and he came away with 20 to become Colgate's third member this season to achieve the milestone.
FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Matt Langel
"That was as good of a win as we have had this season considering the circumstances. The schedule has been a grind and to go on the road tonight and get this win is something this group should be really proud of. We got off to a great start and were able to weather everything Army threw at us.
"Army played great. They have been in a tough stretch of their season, they needed a win and they played like it. They made shots and were relentless pushing the tempo.
"The difference of the game was the poise our guys showed. To manage their pressure, only turn it over 10 times and assist on 24 of 33 made field goals is exceptional. And to step up and make 19-of-22 free throws when we needed them was good to see."
