BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Strong pitching and timely hitting paved the way for Colgate's doubleheader sweep on Saturday. The Raiders mounted a comeback to beat Youngstown State 6-5 before pitching their way to a 2-0 shutout over Gardner-Webb.
Jillian Herbst and
Taylor Ludwick each had four hits on the day to lead Colgate offensively.
Mia Edwards and
Kaitlyn Borruso picked up the wins in the circle.
Game 1 | Colgate 6, Youngstown State 5
Colgate scored five unanswered runs starting in the bottom of the third to erase an early 5-1 hole and complete the weekend sweep of Youngstown State 6-5 in the opening game.
Edwards relieved
Bailey Misken in the third inning with the Raiders trailing 5-1. She put up 4 2/3 scoreless frames with four strikeouts, no walks, and just two hits allowed to earn the win.
Trailing 5-1 in the third, Colgate scored three runs including a two-run triple off the bat of
Meaghan Houk. Houk scored one batter later on a wild pitch to trim the deficit to 5-4.
Herbst scored the final two runs for the Raiders, tying the game on a single by
Adrienne Nardone in the fourth and then crossing the plate as the winning run on a sacrifice fly from
Morgan Farrah in the sixth to put Colgate in front for good 6-5.
Edwards shut the door with perfect sixth and seventh innings to secure the 6-5 victory.
Game 2 | Colgate 2, Gardner-Webb 0
The strong pitching from Game 1 carried over to the nightcap. Borruso and Misken combined to toss a seven-inning shutout while allowing five hits and striking out three. Borruso secured the win after scattering three hits over five clean frames.
Colgate broke the scoreless game with a run in the second. A double steal with runners on the corners led to the first run as Ludwick raced home on the throw down to second base.
Houk capped off the scoring with an RBI double in the fourth, scoring Ludwick to push the Raiders in front 2-0 and it was dominant pitching from there.
Misken fired the final two innings and struck out two to complete the 2-0 victory.

Head Coach Marissa Lamison-Myers
"I was so impressed with the way we battled today in the box. Both
Taylor Ludwick and Jill Herbst came up big offensively and in the circle
Mia Edwards and
Kaitlyn Borruso were locked in. Defensively we were able to turn a few double plays and a big double play by
Elizabeth Nitka helped flip the momentum. We can enjoy this one for a bit but need to be focused for tomorrow."
