Colgate Drops Tight Game at Home

Late Fouls Surge Siena Over Colgate

HAMILTON – Colgate women's basketball hits a skid, falling 62-58 at home against Siena College.

A late fourth-quarter foul on Colgate stifled a Raider comeback as the Saints bumped their lead from two to four points with ten seconds left in the game.

Siena opened the scoring with a 6-2 run, with Colgate's basket coming from freshman Madison Schiller. Tiasia McMillan broke up the Saints' run, and Taylor Golembiewski scored a three-point field goal to gain the lead at 7-6.

The lead didn't last long as Siena took their first trip to the charity stripe to score two and then a field goal to lead 10-7. Sophia Diehl broke the short run to have the Raiders trailing by a point. Then, the Raiders took their lead back at 11-10 as Morgan McMahon scored a pair at the foul line.

Continuing the back-and-forth play, the Saints scored a three-pointer to take the lead right back. The Raiders scored three points courtesy of sophomore Golembiewski, but Siena scored another three-point bucket to lead 18-16 to end the first period. Golembiewski and McMahon scored 11-of-16 first-period points.

Siena opened the second with a layup that extended their lead to four points. McMahon responded with a layup to cut Colgate's deficit to two points, but the Saints went on a 4-0 run to lead 24-18. Back-to-back fouls on the Saints brought McMahon to the line to score a basket to cut Siena's lead to five points.

Both teams scored consecutive field goals to keep the score deficit at five points. Golembiewski scored Colgate's second straight basket to cut Siena's lead to 26-23. The Saints retaliated with a 4-2 run to lead 30-25. Both teams then scored two baskets, but Siena still led 34-29 to end the first half of play.

Coming out of the halftime break, Golembiewski scored a three-point field goal for the Raiders, then Alexa Brodie scored a pair at the foul line to have the game tied at 34.

Siena went for a three-point play after a foul on the Raiders, but fortunately for Colgate, Siena only scored two points. The Saints got another chance at the free throw line scoring three to lead 39-34.

The back-to-back fouls on Colgate caused them to double down, as Diehl went on a 4-2 run to trim the Raiders' deficit to three points. Siena answered Diehl's run with a three-pointer to bring their lead up to six points.

Golembiewski started a run for Colgate as the Raiders scored six unanswered points to tie the game at 44, with four of the points scored coming from McMahon. Golembiewski then went to the foul line to get Colgate the lead back at 45-44.

Siena answered Colgate's 7-0 run with a three-point field goal, but Golebiewski scored another field goal to tie the game again at 47. The Saints closed out the third with a 4-1 run to lead 51-48. Golembiewski and Diehl scored a combined 15 third-period points.

Head Women's Basketball Coach Ganiyat Adeduntan

"The difference maker in today's game was what we allowed them to do offensively. We did not defend up to our standard, and you can't win games if you're allowing 50% at the three-point line. Our effort and fight were there. That's just who we are as a team. It's just hard to win a game if you allow your opponent to shoot and be open. We're going to head back to the drawing board to prepare for next Saturday's game and look to build off our effort and fight with conference play quickly approaching."

UP NEXT
Colgate (4-5) returns to Cotterell Court next Saturday, Dec. 17, for the final home non-conference game of the season. SUNY Oswego comes to Hamilton for a 2 p.m. scheduled tip-off.
