Colgate Falls 2-0 in its First of Two Games at ASU

TEMPE, Ariz. — Arizona State scored a goal in both of the first two periods en route to a 2-0 win over Colgate in front of a packed crowd in the grand opening of ASU's Mullett Arena.

The Sun Devils got on the board with 40 seconds remaining in the first. Lucas Skillinger played a pass to Josh Doan, who skated in and beat Carter Gylander five-hole to put Arizona State ahead 1-0.

The Raiders went on the penalty kill twice in the first period and successfully killed both. The first came at the 10:15 mark after Sebastian Tamburro got called for hooking, and the second was three minutes later when Pierson Brandon got hit for interference.

ASU then doubled its lead five minutes into the second period. The Raiders turned the puck over in their offensive zone. Jack Jensen picked it up and tapped a pass to Ryan O'Reilly, who slotted a shot into the goal.

At the 13:40 mark of the second, the Raiders had another pair of good chances. Alex Young and Ross Mitton both fired shots that were saved. Young's shot deflected off the goalie and nearly rolled in.

Later in the period, Carter Gylander came up clutch with back-to-back stops. The junior finished with 27 saves in the game.

The Raiders went back on the power play just over halfway through the second. Colgate generated multiple shots during the power play but could not score.

Colgate's second power play came with 2:38 remaining after the Sun Devils got called for a five-minute major. Although, the power play did not last long, as Levi Glasman got called for hooking with 40 seconds left in the period.

ASU got called for hooking with 8:13 left in the third, giving the Raiders another power play opportunity, but they could not capitalize.
Colgate then killed off another Arizona State penalty later in the third. The Raiders' penalty kill unit held strong the entire game, shutting down the Sun Devils on all five man-up opportunities.

Colgate outshot Arizona State 15-9 in the second and 11-7 in the third, finishing with a 32-29 total advantage in shots.

Head Coach Don Vaughan

"It's the same story as last week. We had our chances and didn't finish. Our work was there but there was nothing to show for it on the score sheet. We are very close and we will keep at it but we must find a way to manufacture some goals."
