Volleyball Rallies to Beat Binghamton

Raiders win final three sets to rally past Bearcats

HAMILTON – Colgate staged a late-night rally and took the final three sets to defeat Binghamton 3-1 in Wednesday's final non-conference test of the regular season.

Colgate's gritty performance against a tough Binghamton side, which had won four of its last five coming into the match, saw two of the first three sets decided by three points or less. The Raiders finished the night with a .189 hitting percentage, edging Binghamton's .122 clip.

Six Raiders tallied at least five kills on the night, led by Abby Shadwick, who posted a double-double behind 13 kills and 12 digs. Gillian Hauschild was also in double-digit kills with a season-high 11 and hit .500 for the night, while Carlie Rzeszotarski added seven kills.

Defensively, Taylor Cigna had 22 digs, and Julia Kurowski (7) and Harper Snyder (7) combined for 14 of the team's 18 blocks on the night. Rachael Martinez added three service aces in the win.

Set 1: Binghamton 25, Colgate 22
Colgate's attack wasn't quite up to speed and Binghamton built a 4-0 run to lead 16-11 after three consecutive attack errors on the Raider side. The Raiders fought all the way back to tie the set, 19-19, on the heels of a 4-0 run thanks to a pair of kills from Athena Leota. Binghamton came away with big blocks down the stretch, however, to take the opening set, 25-22.

Set 2: Colgate 25, Binghamton 20
The Raiders limited their miscues and rode the hot hand to a strong response. Shadwick made key plays offensively and defensively, tallying a match-high five kills in the frame. She added a service ace to push Colgate's lead to 20-13 on the strength of a 4-1 scoring spurt that gave the Raiders momentum. Snyder and Sophie Thompson kept their presence in the middle and the Raiders evened the match with the second-set victory, 25-20.

Set 3: Colgate 25, Binghamton 23
The third consecutive tight decision came down to the wire. Colgate trailed 19-15 before turning the tides with a late 7-1 rally. Consecutive kills from Caroline Altergott, Hauschild, and Snyder sparked the run to push the Raiders in front, 22-20. Hauschild brought the energy with four kills in the set and Thompson capped it off from the middle to give Colgate the upper hand with the third-set triumph, 25-23.

Set 4: Colgate 25, Binghamton 18
Colgate blitzed out front 8-1 and never looked back. Hauschild and Greta Hoogstra got the Raiders going with a strong middle presence and a service ace by Kurowski helped push Colgate in front 11-5. Binghamton chipped away and managed to close within 19-16 but Colgate countered with a 3-0 closing run and Hauschild's kill capped off the win in fitting fashion, 25-18.

Head Coach Ryan Baker

"We knew we were in for a tough match tonight. Binghamton is having a great season and competes hard on every point. I liked our response after Set 1. We got some strong play from Gillian tonight and our middles were good in all areas of the match."
