Cummings Scores 19 in Loss at Boston U

Terriers Snap Colgate's Four-Game Winning Streak, 76-72

BOSTON – A battle between two of the top teams in the Patriot League went down to the wire and Boston University came out on top 76-72 Friday afternoon inside Case Gymnasium.

Boston U seemingly could not miss a shot in the first half and that's what it took to snap Colgate's four-game winning streak. The Terriers extended their win streak to four games.

Colgate trailed by as many as 13 in the second half before climbing back to cut the deficit to one possession. Jack Ferguson's driving layup pulled the Raiders within 55-53, but the Terriers countered with a 12-2 run and led 67-55 with 6:18 left.

One last gasp for the Raiders saw a 71-67 ball game with 53 seconds left after the defense forced two turnovers and Ryan Moffatt got a layup to go. Colgate had two offensive chances with the same score but could not cash in and the Terriers closed it out from the foul line.

Nelly Cummings led the Raiders with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Tucker Richardson registered 11 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Moffatt (14) and Ferguson (11) gave Colgate four in double figures.

Boston U's Javante McCoy and Sukhmail Mathon combined for 39 points. The Terriers were 81% (18-for-22) from the foul line compared to Colgate's 69% (11-for-16) and that may have been the difference.

Richardson scored eight of his 11 points inside the first five minutes of the game. His second 3-pointer pushed Colgate's lead to 14-7 at the first timeout. Oliver Lynch-Daniels swished a trey and then finished an and-one in a 6-0 swing to stretch the lead to 22-15 midway through the frame.

Lynch-Daniels' three-point play was Colgate's last bucket for more than seven minutes and Boston U used a 12-1 run to take the lead for good. Moffatt beat the shot clock with a 3-pointer in the final minute and the Raiders trailed by eight, 40-32, at intermission.

Colgate's deficit reached double-digits early in the second half before the Raiders started making shots on offense and stops on defense, but it was too little too late in the 76-72 final.

RICHARDSON REACHES ANOTHER MILESTONE
Tucker Richardson became the 11th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. He's the first to reach the feat since Will Rayman '20.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Matt Langel

On the game:
"Boston has played more league games than us obviously and had some disappointing results of their own. With that, their experienced roster and coaching, their recent good play and the battles we have had the last few years, we knew they would be ready to go. We got off to a good start, but we had a number of good chances at the basket throughout the game and didn't convert. Credit to them, they did. Sukhmail Mathon and Javante McCoy definitely got to their spots and made some quality baskets. Their team defense was good. They played with an intensity and urgency that affected us at times. It was certainly a hard fought game that we can learn a lot from as we get ready for a few games to start next week."

On Tucker Richardson reaching another milestone:
"
He's a terrific player. He understands the game and how it should be played. Because of that and his skill set, and his competitive spirit, he puts himself in positions to score and rebound and assist."
