Baltimore, Md. - After coming back from a 10-point deficit and taking the lead with just 26 seconds remaining, the Raiders could not stop Loyola's Lex Therien who scored the winning basket with just under four seconds on the clock. Therien led the Greyhounds with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Maryland native
Sophia Diehl led the Raiders with 16 points, 12 of which came from behind the arc in the fourth quarter.
Alexa Brodie and
Morgan McMahon each contributed 13 points and Brodie added nine assists.
The game started out with Loyola jumping out to a four point lead. Morgan McMahon struck first for Colgate, nailing a three off an assist from Alexa Brodie. Brodie made another handoff on the next basket as she fed Tiasia McMillan the ball for her first basket of the night to give the Raiders the lead. Sophia Diehl added a jumper off a pass from McMillan to lead by three at 7-4. Loyola responded with a basket and Taylor Golembiewski put in a basket from beyond the arc to put the lead back at four. McMahon added another deuce to end Colgate's scoring for the quarter and the Raiders led 12-11.
Second quarter action saw Brodie scoring first for Colgate to hold the lead at 14-13. The Greyhounds came back with a 7-0 run to take the lead at 20-14. McMahon then put in a driving layup and another pull up jumper to keep the Raiders within four. Brodie added the next three of the night and pulled the team within three. Loyola responded and increased their lead to eight before Golembiewski dropped her second three of the game. Golembiewski went to the line next and put four straight free throws in the basket narrowing the gap to two. Loyola responded with a basket and two free throws of their own before Geddy Rerko off an offensive rebound tapped in the ball with time running out. Loyola entered the halftime break up 34-30.
Loyola jumped out to a 10-point lead early in the third quarter. Colgate head coach Ganiyat Adeduntan called a timeout to settle the team down. Morgan Frank rallied the team with her three point basket off a fast break. Brodie added a jumper from just outside the paint to pull within five. Diehl put in her second deuce of the night to keep the gap to just five but Therien sank two from the stripe to extend the lead to seven and the quarter ended with Loyola up 44-37.
Brodie put the first four points on the board for the Raiders in the fourth quarter. She scored a layup and then took two trips to the foul line after she drew contact from Loyola's Bri Rozzi on her next shot attempt. Before Brodie sank the free throws, Loyola had extended their lead back to ten. McMahon put in a pull up jump shot to shrink the lead to six, but Therien added two more for Loyola. McMahon came right back with a layup to get the Raiders back in it, until Rozzi added another jumper.
With 4:30 to go, the Raiders were down eight but Golembiewski off a fast break scored two more to bring her total to 12 for the night and Colgate back within six. From there it was the Diehl show as every time Diehl touched the ball she sank a long shot from behind the arc. The first of her four in a row brought Colgate within three. Loyola responded with two more baskets and their lead was back up to seven. Diehl came right back and let it fly and the gap was down to four. After a defensive rebound from McMahon, the ball was fed to Diehl who sank number three. Loyola responded with a three of their own and with 1:28 to play they were leading by four. Back down the court, Brodie handed out her ninth assist to Diehl and number four went swish. The Raiders were back within one.
As Loyola missed a shot the Raiders came down with the defensive rebound and fed the ball to Brodie who drove to the paint for a pull up jump shot. Colgate led by one, 61-60, with 25 ticks on the clock remaining. After two missed shots by the Greyhounds a scramble for the rebound resulted in a jump ball with the arrow favoring Loyola. With just six seconds left, Therien put in a shot from the paint to take the lead with under four seconds left in the game. A Colgate timeout was called to draw up a play. The senior co-captain Brodie drove hard to the basket but was blocked by Therien, giving Loyola their first Patriot League win of the season.
