Strong Second Half Boosts Raiders

Colgate Knocks Off Army For First League Win, 76-57

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Jack Ferguson scored 14 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and notched a career-high five steals on the night he eclipsed 1,000 career points to help Colgate knock off previously league-unbeaten Army 76-57 Monday night at Cotterell Court.

Colgate (5-10, 1-1 PL) outscored Army (9-7, 3-1 PL) 46-30 in the second half to pull away for its first league victory. The Raiders shot 46% overall (28-of-61) from the field while connecting on 11 3-pointers (11-for-27), matching their league-best average of 10.7 per game.

For the second time this season Colgate finished with five players in double-figure scoring. Ferguson led the way and filled the stat sheet with 14 points, eight rebounds, five steals and three assists. The senior guard was 5-of-12 from the field and 4-of-8 from downtown.

Tucker Richardson registered 13 points and seven rebounds, Ryan Moffatt finished with 12 points, Nelly Cummings 10, and Jeff Woodward capped off his first collegiate double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.

The Raiders turned on the jets late in the first half and it was a 10-0 run that put the home team in front. Cummings hit a pull-up jumper at the end of the shot clock and then swished a 3-pointer to give the Raiders their first lead 26-24.

In a half where Army led by as many as 10 and held a double-digit lead for large portions, Woodward's driving layup in the final seconds of the stanza gave Colgate a 30-27 lead at the break.

Colgate's momentum continued in the second half after Army scored the first four points to take a brief 31-30 lead. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Cummings and Ferguson put the Raiders in front for good – with Ferguson's trey putting him over 1,000 points for his career.

Ferguson connected two more 3-pointers to key another big run – a 10-2 spurt that helped push the lead to 50-35 eight minutes into the second period. Moffatt scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half and Colgate led by double-digits the rest of the way.

Sam Thomson and Oliver Lynch-Daniels scored six points apiece in solid reserve minutes down the stretch and the Raiders sealed their first Patriot League win of the season 76-57.

FERGUSON REACHES MILESTONE
Ferguson, who came into the game needing seven points, became the 37th member of the 1,000-point club with an early 3-pointer in the second half. He is the first Raider to reach the milestone since Rapolas Ivanauskas hit the mark in the 2020 Patriot League championship.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Matt Langel

"It was certainly nice to be back home tonight and it was good to get our full team back together. Tonight we did a great job on Jalen Rucker, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week, and our team defense was really good.

"In the second half we got ourselves a few more possessions, some turnovers that led to offense, some offensive rebounds that led to putbacks, and some dagger 3s as we call those kickout 3s on offensive rebounds. Those made the difference. Basketball is a rhythm game. Hopefully this is the first step to us finding a good rhythm into Patriot League play."
