WEST POINT, N.Y. – Colgate hit the post twice and came within inches on multiple occasions, but Army was the only team to find the back of the net in a 3-0 decision on Saturday at Malek Stadium.
Two early chances didn't go the Raiders' way after
Will Stroud sent a left-footed rocket off the post and
Adam Fam beamed the rebound off the crossbar in the 13th minute. The misfortunes turned into a common theme, as none of Colgate's seven shots were on target despite missing by narrow margins on many of those opportunities.
Nick Gerlach registered three saves before conceding the first goal of the match in the 18th minute. A Black Knights' corner kick twirled to the left post and Jack Eaton was on the receiving end for a one-timer to stake Army a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
The Raiders earned another quality chance early in the second frame after Stroud created space on the far side. Stroud inched toward the center of the box before striking a shot just wide.
Army doubled its lead just over 10 minutes into the second half. Andrew Guerra raced down the left side and finished a low shot to extend the home team's lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute.
Kian Alberto nearly capitalized on a free kick in the 74th minute, but his left-footed shot struck the right side of the netting. Moments later, a cross entered the box but Fam's corresponding header tumbled inches over the crossbar.
Army added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute and held on to preserve the 3-0 victory.
