Box Score HAMILTON – The friendly confines of Cotterell Court were not enough to boost Colgate past Princeton as the Raiders dropped a 2-3 decision to the Tigers in the first round of the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament. Princeton rallied from a two set deficit to take the match by scores of 18-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-10. The loss dropped Colgate's record to 1-6.
The Tigers took control of the match in the final set after Colgate had rallied from a 3-7 deficit to tie the score at 8-8 on an attack by
Abby Shadwick. Following a pair of successful attacks by Princeton, an attack error by the Tigers made the Score 10-9. That was as close as the Raiders would come as Princeton ran off five of the next six points for the win.
Colgate appeared to be in control of the match through the first two sets, never trailing in the first set. The score was tied at 16 when an attack by
Sophie Thompson gave the raiders a 17-16 lead.
Julia Kurowski banged in five straight service points for the Raiders for a 22-17 lead that Princeton could not overcome.
The Raiders were able to gain breathing room from a 17-15 lead in the second set by scoring four consecutive points, concluding three service points form Kurowski. Princeton pulled within 22-18 but the Raiders closed out the match on attacks by Thompson and
Gillian Hauschild and an attack error by Princeton.
Set number three was tied at 8 before Princeton took a lead it would not relinquish on a service error by Colgate. The Tigers gradually pulled away for the 25-19 victory.
The fourth set was led by the Tigers from start to finish. After trailing 8-7 Colgate was outscored 6-3 and was never able to shrink the Princeton lead to less than three setting up the deciding set.
