HAMILTON – A Colgate season-tying run of half-a-dozen goals arrived a little too late as the Raiders dropped a 14-10 Senior Day decision to Boston University.
Adam Salvaggio scored twice during that flurry to help Colgate tally the final six of the game over a 10½-minute stretch. Other closing goals went to
James Caddigan,
Jacob Sposita,
Marshall Terres and
Brian Minicus.
Four different Raiders found the netting twice in this game, with Minicus, Sposita and
Mike Hawkins joining Salvaggio and boosting their season totals. Minicus added four assists to equal his career high of six points.
This was a 3-3 game way back in the early portion of the second quarter before the Terriers took control. BU went into halftime riding a 7-0 run, punctuated by Louis Perfetto's second of the game with just 2.1 seconds left before the break.
The Terriers stretched their run to 11-1 and the score to 14-4 by early in the fourth quarter. Perfetto scored twice again late in the third, his fourth goal of the afternoon coming with 11 seconds showing.
Thor Adamec tied for ground ball honors with four and matched his career high with two caused turnovers.
Thomas Colucci (10-of-19) and
Brian Wilmans (5-of-8) shared faceoff duties and were effective, combining for 15 wins in 27 draws.
Before the game, Colgate honored its 12 seniors: Caddigan, Hawkins,
Bobby Goggin,
Nick Salameda,
Chris Francesco,
Shane Houska,
Alessio Giovannetti,
Matt Harris,
John Galbraith,
Sean Nelson,
Charlie Messineo and
Owen Callahan.
And in addition to Saturday's game, the Raiders are participating in their inaugural "Raider Plunge." The entire team is meeting Sunday at noon at the Glendening Boathouse on Lake Moraine for a fundraising activity to benefit Colgate University employee Cindy Wilcox.
Wilcox has worked at Frank Dining Hall and The Coop on campus for more than 18 years. Her home tragically burned back on Feb. 17 and since then, a GoFundMe Page has been created in her support. At last check, the page had raised $51,268 toward the goal of $60,000. The team thanks those for their time and consideration in donating to the
GoFundMe Page HERE.

Colgate head coach Matt Karweck: (On the game) "You can't give up seven in a row. You've got to give BU credit because when it was 3-3 at the beginning of the second quarter, we were feeling good about ourselves only to have them go on a seven-goal run.
"We talked all week about being consistent and making the simple plays, but during that second period we turned the ball over, we weren't hitting shots and their goalie made some saves. I was impressed with him.
"But I was really pleased with our ability to make our own comeback. We ended up putting six on the board in a row and we just ran out of time. We had a good run there. But we've got to be more consistent during the entire course of the game. One thing that happens with a young team is you tend to panic, and their run in the second quarter is what determined the game, unfortunately. We had to stop that run and we couldn't do it."
(On Senior Day) "Today was Senior Day and I was really proud of the way the seniors represented themselves in their last scheduled home game. I wish we could have played our seniors a little more. Those guys have done such a good job over the course of their careers here.
"I told everyone in the locker room to be ready. We're one situation away from being in the tournament, so be ready and be safe."
(On Sunday's Raider Plunge) "We're going to jump into Lake Moraine to raise awareness for Cindy Wilcox, who has worked on campus for many years. She had an unfortunate accident with a fire at her home and we are trying to raise money to help her purchase a new home. It's a community service opportunity for our team to help one of our own here at Colgate.
"We talk a lot about Grit, Growth and Gratitude. Those are the three Gs. The Grit is let's continue to work after this game, let's continue to sacrifice and be relentless through what we're doing. Growth, we've got to grow. Learn from the things we did well and also from the things that we didn't. And then our Gratitude piece, which is our perspective on life. Somebody had a tragic thing happen and for us to take time out of our Sunday to raise awareness for her, I'm really proud of that.
"Thank you to the seniors, and we want to grow from this loss."
