McAvoy Pegged as Student-Athlete of the Year Finalist

As a Double-Major, McAvoy Recognized as ECAC Hockey Student-Athlete of the Year Finalist

ALBANY, N.Y. – Senior captain Paul McAvoy of the Colgate men's hockey program has been named a finalist for ECAC Hockey's 2021 Student-Athlete of the Year.

As an English (Creative Writing) and Psychological double-major, McAvoy has maintained a 3.49 cumulative GPA. He was voted as team captain for the 2021 campaign, is a SAAC member and committee advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives and the program's voter education efforts. A member of the Wellness Advocates, McAvoy has led the team's relationship with the Headway Foundation for three years as he promotes concussion awareness and prevention.
 
A three-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team member, McAvoy is currently completing two honors theses in both psychology and creative writing. In the community, he has coordinated visits with Team Impact individuals, to Sherburne Elementary where the team volunteers, and has helped expand the game of hockey by running a kids camp in Philadelphia.
 
On the ice, McAvoy has laced up for 124 career games for the Raiders where he's posted 33 points by 19 goals and 14 assists. The Richmond, Ky., native holds five points this season, which included a hat trick performance against RIT on Dec. 29, 2020. He also recorded a shorthanded goal in the same game, for the first in the Raider program since Jan. 21, 2017.
 
STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Each of the 12 league institutions boast one finalist, while for one year only, on-ice accomplishments were removed from consideration for this award.
 
The Student-Athlete of the Year is presented annually to an ECAC Hockey men's player who best establishes himself as a leader within their team, in the classroom, and in the community.
 
The winner of the 2021 Student-Athlete of the Year award will be announced on Saturday, March 20.

UP NEXT
After a bye weekend to prepare, the Raiders will compete in the ECAC Tournament. The field kicks off as No. 4 seeded Colgate faces the No. 1 seed in Quinnipiac again in the ECAC Semifinals on Thursday, March 18. Hosted by the top-2 seeds, Colgate will make a return trip to Hamden for the Semifinal matchup.
 
The winner advances to face the winner of No. 2-seeded Clarkson and the No. 3 seed in St. Lawrence in the ECAC Championship on Saturday, March 20.
