BALTIMORE – An unfortunate final two minutes of regulation ended with Loyola claiming a 2-1 victory over the Colgate women's soccer team on Monday afternoon at the Ridley Athletic Complex.
Loyola (1-0) scored the game-winning goal with 2:33 left in regulation. A centering feed from the right wing was redirected by a Colgate defender into the back of the net and the Greyhounds held possession over the final two minutes to preserve the 2-1 triumph.
This came less than a minute after the Raiders tied the game at 1-1.
Colgate (1-1) had the better chances in the second half and cashed in the equalizer after
Ruby Diodati was awarded a free kick in the 86th minute. The junior defender sniped a low shot from just outside the box and buried the game-tying goal inside the left post.
Despite the Raiders having more possession for most of the second half, Loyola was the first to crack the scoreboard when Ada Clare Tempert won a loose ball battle. Colgate keeper
Sophia Boggs raced out to cover, but Tempert got the first touch and rolled it into the back of the net in the 54th minute.
Neither team found the back of the net in a back-and-forth first half.
Sage DiGiulio had one of the best chances in the 35th minute after weaving through three defenders, but her shot whistled high and the two teams were in a 0-0 stalemate after 45 minutes.
Emily Amano had one of Colgate's better opportunities in the 80th minute. She earned a free kick from the left side of the box and drove a shot on goal, but it was saved by the Greyhounds keeper.
The Raiders continued to control possession in the closing minutes. Diodati's first goal of the season evened the score, but it would not stand as Loyola's late tally sealed the home team's 2-1 victory.

Head Coach Lyndse Hokanson
On the game:
"Today was another great challenge for our team against a tough Patriot league opponent on the road. Loyola was disciplined in their system and we had a hard time breaking them down in the first half.
"The game opened up a bit in the second and both teams got some good chances. At the end of the day, we're obviously disappointed with the final score, but I was really proud of the group's willingness and commitment to push for the equalizer.
"We got some great minutes from players coming off the bench and am happy with the way we shifted our mindset when the game called for it. We will learn a ton from this and be better as a result as we prepare for BU at the end of the week."
