Colgate Settles For 1-1 Draw at Lehigh

Anelli Scores First Collegiate Goal in Overtime Decision

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – First-year Sara Anelli netted her first collegiate goal and Colgate settled for a 1-1 double-overtime draw at Lehigh on Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

Both teams found the back of the net in the first half and it turned into a defensive battle from there with 110 minutes not being enough to decide a winner.

Colgate found itself in an early hole after Lehigh opened the scoring in the third minute. The Raiders picked up the pressure and it paid dividends when Anelli sent home the equalizer in the 33rd minute.

Lauren Rougas pushed a through ball ahead, where Anelli created space near the top of the box and beat the Lehigh keeper with a left-footed shot off the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Sophia Boggs made a key save in the 51st minute and the rest of the second half belonged to the Raiders, who outshot Lehigh 11-3 over the final 45 minutes.

Colgate earned a flurry of opportunities down the stretch. Ruby Diodati served a corner kick into the box, where Lyna Schaffer and Rougas both connected on headers sent just wide in the 88th minute. Anelli struck a low shot on target less than a minute later, but it was turned away by the Lehigh keeper.

Diodati sent another cross into the box in the final seconds, but Hannah Pinkus' redirected header was sent wide and the clock showed zeros without a game-winner.

The overtime periods were a battle in the midfield. Colgate and Lehigh took one shot apiece, with neither attempt finding the net and the two teams reached the final horn in a 1-1 stalemate.

FROM THE SOURCE
Head Coach Lyndse Hokanson

On the game:
"Another tough game at another tough league opponent. We definitely didn't do ourselves any favors conceding so early. We asked the team this week to raise the mentality in terms of commitment inside the box on both ends and for the most part they stood up to that challenge. I know it seems repetitive, but I really am pleased with the growth we are making in a lot of areas and the team's willingness to continue to strive to get better every day."

On the first-year success:
"Everyone was excited for Sara [Anelli] to get her first goal tonight, and for Lauren [Rougas] to get the assist is a great testament to our first-years who have provided us with really valuable minutes through the season so far. It was another true team effort, and though of course we would have liked to win, I am pleased to come away with a really hard point on the road."

NOTES
Sara Anelli is Colgate's fifth different goal scorer this season.
