ALBANY, N.Y. – Colgate Softball could not keep up with hot-hitting Albany and dropped both ends of Sunday's return doubleheader by final scores of 11-9 and 10-4.
Colgate dropped to 2-4 on the young season, while Albany snapped an eight-game losing streak and moved to 4-8 overall.
Steph Jacoby paced the Colgate squad with four hits, six RBIs and two runs scored on the day.
Game 1: Albany 11, Colgate 9
Colgate raced out to an early 5-0 lead in the opening game of the doubleheader. Jacoby keyed the early start with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first and two-run single in the second.
Morgan Farrah and
Mia Guevarra added a pair of RBIs and the Raiders had a healthy advantage through two innings.
The first four Albany batters reached base in a three-run bottom of the third. A bases-loaded walk by Madison Petrella brought the first run across before Kelly Barkeveich drove in two on a single up the middle.
Bailey Misken ended the frame with a strikeout to keep the Raiders in front 5-3.
Albany took control behind eight runs on six hits in the bottom of the fourth. A three-run homer from Katie Falotico gave the home team its first lead 6-5 and back-to-back RBI base hits extended the lead to 11-5 as the Great Danes sent 12 batters to the plate.
Jacoby continued her hot hitting and slashed a three-run home run to cut the deficit to 11-8 in the sixth.
Rebecca Johnson added to the late rally with an RBI single in the seventh and Colgate brought the tying run to the plate, but the Great Danes picked up the final two outs to seal the 11-9 opening victory.
Jacoby was Colgate's firepower on offense, finishing with three hits and six RBIs.
Game 2: Albany 10, Colgate 4
Albany maintained its offensive pace in the nightcap, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. A two-run homer from Petrella was one of seven hits in the inning and the Great Danes opened a 6-0 lead.
Kaitlyn Borruso entered the circle in relief and kept the home team at bay through the fourth inning, allowing the Raiders to trim the lead down to 7-3 after a two-run homer by Farrah – her second of the weekend.
Guevarra and
Virginia Irby plated runs in the fifth and sixth, but Albany added a pair of insurance runs in the home half of the sixth to pull away for the 10-4 final in Game 2.
Farrah and Guevarra led the Raiders offensively with two hits each in the nightcap.
