Colgate Drops 3-1 Decision to Lafayette

Ellis Miller Scores First of the Season in Loss

HAMILTON – A pair of late second-half goals made the difference as Colgate dropped a 3-1 decision to Lafayette on Saturday at Beyer-Small '76 Field.

Colgate's Ellis Miller scored her first goal of the season early in the second half to tie the game at 1-1. Ally Giovino created separation from her defender on the right side before sending a cross into the center of the box. Miller was on the receiving end and buried the one-timer in the 55th minute.

Lafayette (1-1) shot right back on the offensive end. Sophia Boggs made a spectacular save but unfortunate events ensued after the Leopards reclaimed the lead in the 67th minute. Camryn Monfort netted the go-ahead marker with a quick strike into the lower left side of the netting.

Colgate (1-3) searched for the equalizer and found one last gasp of offensive pressure. Miller fired a shot just high before Ruby Diodati blasted one off the left post in the 71st minute. Sage DiGiulio had a shot blocked one minute later and that would prove to be the Raiders' final threat.

The Leopards extended their lead in the 80th minute on a goal by Rory Schauder and kept Colgate at bay over the final stretch to preserve the 3-1 final.

Head Coach Lyndse Hokanson

On the game:
"Obviously we are disappointed in the result, but I am really proud of a lot of moments of today's performance. We tasked the group this week with growing in terms of mindset and competing, and I felt our first half was a good reflection of that challenge.

"We had some great stretches that we couldn't convert into goals and conceding late in the half really hurt. We responded well coming out in the second, but unfortunately, Lafayette really seemed to punish us for every mistake we made today and we weren't able to do the same on the other end.

"I know it hurts for our group, but that's how the game goes every now and again. We knew Lafayette was a scrappy group and they proved that today, making us work for everything and taking advantage of their opportunities. I am still tremendously proud of the growth we have made this week and only wish it would have been rewarded with a result today.

"This is a league that will constantly pick at your weaknesses, so we have to continue to learn and continue to get better and that's what we will try to do."

NOTES
Ellis Miller's goal was her first of the season and 10th of her career.
Ally Giovino picked up the first point of her collegiate career with the assist.
• Colgate tallied seven shots in each half to finish with a season-high 14.
• Lafayette held a 5-2 edge in shots on goal and 5-3 mark in corner kicks.
Sophia Boggs made two saves in net for the Raiders.
