BOSTON – Colgate had three Raider sophomores score their first career goals but it wasn't enough Saturday to hold off Boston University in a 16-11 decision.
The Raiders built a 4-1 lead as faceoff specialist
Thomas Colucci scored the middle marker of a three-goal flurry over 28 seconds midway in the first quarter.
Donny Gayhardt's first career tally handed Colgate a 6-3 cushion at the end of the opening period.
And then
Michael Lia found the netting twice in the second half – both of those goals also the first of his career – to keep the Raiders close. His initial goal with 2:30 left in the third quarter pulled Colgate within 10-9, and his second with 9:52 showing in the fourth made it a 13-11 game.
Colgate in the second half was without the services of leading scorer
Mike Hawkins after the senior captain was injured early in the second quarter. Hawkins scored unassisted goals late in the first and early in the second to spark that opening 8-3 outburst.
The Terriers scored the last three of the first half and then outscored Colgate 10-3 in the second half to improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League North Division.
Colucci was a solid 11-of-21 at the faceoff-X, while
Brian Wilmans finished 4-of-7. Colucci grabbed seven ground balls for the second game in a row.
Colgate is now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the North Division, still alive for one of two places in the Patriot League tournament.
