Raiders Open Season at Wagner

Colgate Drops Both Ends of Saturday’s Doubleheader

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Colgate opened its season with a doubleheader at Wagner on Saturday.

GAME 1: Wagner 6, Colgate 0
Colgate couldn't cash in with runners in scoring position in each of the first two innings. Virginia Irby led the game off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Morgan Farrah, but she was stranded there. Rachel Carney was left at second base in the second inning after Wagner pitcher Eve Harvey struck out the side.

It was a pitchers' duel through three innings. Bailey Misken was dealing with four strikeouts through the first three innings to keep the game scoreless, but the Seahawks scratched three runs across the plate in the fourth and added two more in the fifth. An RBI single by Natalie Del Ponte in the sixth made it 6-0.

Farrah and Adrienne Nardone both singled in the sixth and were set up at second and third with one out, but Wagner once more worked out of trouble with a strikeout and lineout ending the inning and Wagner held on for the 6-0 victory.

GAME 2: Wagner 8, Colgate 0 (5)
Wagner scored a run in the bottom of the first when an RBI single by Scarlett Lloyd gave the home team an early 1-0 lead. The Seahawks put the game away with three runs in the third and four runs in the fourth.

Colgate's best chance to score came in the top of the fourth after Mia Guevarra led the inning off with a single. Steph Jacoby followed with a base hit to left field, but a double play and strikeout ended the frame with the Raiders still looking for their first run.

Wagner plated four runs on three hits in the fourth. A pair of RBI doubles from Amelia Van Orman and Breanna Thompson propelled the home team to an 8-0 victory.

NOTES
Morgan Farrah led the Raiders with three hits on the day.
Steph Jacoby added two hits, while Rebecca Johnson was on base twice with a single and walk.
• Freshmen Kara Fusco, Morgan Lindsay, and Elizabeth Nitka all made their Colgate debuts.
• Fusco (first base) and Nitka (shortstop) started both games for the Raiders.
