ALBANY, N.Y. – Colgate wrapped up the nonconference portion of its 2021 schedule with Saturday's defeat at the hands of No. 20 Albany.
Mike Hawkins continued his early fine form with a pair of goals and
Michael Minicus scored a hat trick in his first collegiate start. But Albany rode an 8-1 second-half run to pull away in the 15-9 final.
Colgate (0-2) trailed 4-2 and 6-3 at the end of the first two quarters, possessing the ball in quality numbers but guilty of a few too many turnovers to maintain momentum.
The third quarter was a 3-3 wash.
James Caddigan and
Marshall Terres scored within 53 seconds of one another to make it a 6-5 game, and Minicus scored his second midway through to make it 7-6.
But Albany (1-0) found the range for the final two goals of the quarter, sparking a 5-0 run that carried into the first four minutes of the fourth. The Great Danes built their advantage to 15-7 before the Raiders tacked on a pair in the final minute.
Minicus tallied his three goals on three shots. Hawkins upped his season goals total to six and his career tally to 53, while
Alex Pistorius scored the first of his career with an opening period laser.
Midfielder
Ryan Decker had a terrific afternoon, scoring a goal on his only shot attempt, adding an assist and leading the Raiders with five ground balls and two caused turnovers. The caused turnovers were a career high and the five ground balls matched his collegiate best.
Jakob Patterson led Albany with four goals and four assists. Alex Burgmaster added a hat trick and Camden Hay scored two goals with four assists in his collegiate debut.
