CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard's Luka Sakota swished a near half-court shot as regulation time expired and then the Crimson used a fast start in overtime to stun Colgate 89-84 on Wednesday night.
Colgate led from the opening tip and never saw a tie score again until it was 76-76 at the end of regulation. Down by three after a pair of made free throws by
Jack Ferguson with 13 seconds left, Harvard's Chris Ledlum missed the potential game-tying 3. But the rebound was batted up in the air and somehow made it to Sakota, who was nothing but net from the logo at the buzzer.
The Raiders cashed in on two key 3-pointers in overtime from
Nelly Cummings and
Ryan Moffatt, but they never led after Harvard scored the first five points. Colgate did get the ball back twice in a one-possession game, but came away with zero points. The Crimson made enough free throws in the final minute to pull away 89-84.
Cummings matched his career high with 25 points and Moffatt's 19 were his most in a Colgate uniform. Those two combined for eight made 3-pointers.
Keegan Records and Ferguson were also in double-figure scoring with 15 and 11, respectively.
Colgate shot a respectable 50% from the field and 46% from behind the arc, but a season-high 17 turnovers proved costly. Harvard made 16 3-point field goals and shot 46% from the field in the win.
Colgate used an early 9-0 run to establish a 16-5 lead. Moffatt netted two layups and buried a 3-pointer while the Raiders connected on seven of their first eight shots from the field. Harvard on the other hand hit on three of its first 16 shots and the Raiders built a double-digit advantage on their way to a 37-30 lead at the break.
The Raiders scored the first seven points out of halftime and led by as many as 14 in the second half before Harvard staged its comeback.

Head Coach Matt Langel
"Winning in college basketball is hard. Winning on the road is even harder. Winning against a championship program is even more of a challenge. I credit Harvard's resolve and determination for continuing to fight literally until the last second. Our guys did a number of really good things to get the lead, answer their push and keep the lead. For whatever reason, we weren't able to close the game out and Harvard took their momentum into OT and made the plays they needed to get the result."
