WEST POINT, N.Y. – Ally Giovino tied the game early in the second half but Army scored less than a minute later and that was the difference in a 2-1 decision Saturday afternoon.
A foul in the box led to the game's first goal and an early deficit for the Raiders. Lauren Drysdale capitalized on the penalty kick to give Army a 1-0 lead 4:47 into the match.
That was the only blemish of the opening stanza, as the two teams were entrenched in a defensive battle the rest of the way.
Grace Poncsak finished the first half with two saves and
Adrienne Vaughn and
Nicole Apuzzi issued shots on target for the Raiders.
The Raiders threatened multiple times early in the second half, earning six of the first seven shots. Colgate's hard work on the offensive end paid off in the 67th minute when Giovino, who had six shots in the second half, found the back of the net to tie the match at 1-1.
Army unfortunately countered just 20 seconds later, taking the ensuing kickoff into Colgate's territory before Kaitlyn Palaian struck the go-ahead marker to give the home team a 2-1 edge.
Vaughn earned Colgate's best late chance but her shot was saved in the 74th minute.
Ruby Diodati served a corner kick into the box where the subsequent shot was off target.
Giovino struck one just wide in the 86th minute and that was Colgate's final attempt as Army held on for the 2-1 result.

Head Coach Lyndse Hokanson
"Looking across the league, great reminder of the parity with so many games ending with one-goal differences. We let ourselves down in some of the big five moments of the game at the start of the half and after we scored. That's always disappointing and for them to answer so quickly is a testament to Army and an area we will hope to improve moving forward. We found ourselves on the wrong side of the result today but hopefully we can use it as a catalyst to drive us forward through the remainder of the schedule."
