EASTON, Pa. – Colgate put a stamp on its season sweep of Lafayette with a decisive 3-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Kirby Sports Center.
With the win, Colgate (13-7, 10-1 PL) runs its winning streak to eight and takes a two-match lead in the Patriot League standings over Lafayette (11-8, 8-3 PL).
Colgate finished with just 12 errors on 103 attack attempts for a .311 hitting percentage while holding Lafayette to a .126 clip in the well-rounded effort.
Athena Leota paced the Raiders with a stellar .556 hitting percentage followed by
Julia Kurowski at .545.
Libby Overmyer (12) and
Alli Lowe (10) both posted double-digit kills while Kurowski added 33 assists.
Cami Carfino led Colgate's stifling defense with 10 digs in the victory.
Set 1: Colgate 25, Lafayette 19
The important opening set was a back-and-forth battle. Neither team led by more than two points until a kill by Overmyer ignited a 3-0 Raider run to open a 17-14 advantage. Lafayette cut the gap to 17-16 but that was as close as the home team would get.
With the score 20-18, back-to-back kills by Lowe and
Harper Snyder helped Colgate cap the opening set by scoring five of the last six points en route to the 25-19 triumph.
Set 2: Colgate 25, Lafayette 20
Lafayette scored the first two points but the Raiders used an early 6-0 surge to build a 15-6 lead. Consecutive kills by Overmyer and Snyder pushed Colgate in front 18-9, but Lafayette climbed back into the set by scoring eight of the next 10 points to trim the margin to 20-17.
Holding a three-point edge, Lowe closed it out with a kill and service ace to give the Raiders a two-set advantage behind a 25-20 victory. Colgate defensively held Lafayette to a .061 attack percentage with nine errors on 20 attempts.
Set 3: Colgate 25, Lafayette 23
The back-and-forth third and final set saw nine ties with both teams trading attacks. Colgate withstood a match-high 18 kills by the Leopards and turned it on down the stretch.
Lafayette opened a late three-point lead twice at 20-17 and 22-19, but a kill by Leota sparked a quick 3-0 Raider spurt to tie the match at 22-22. The Leopards scored the next point to lead 23-22, but Colgate countered with a kill by Kurowski and then back-to-back attack errors by the home team sent the Raiders home with a 25-23 set victory and 3-0 match sweep.
