Colgate Completes Sweep of Holy Cross

Four in Double Figures Lead Raiders to 78-60 Victory

WORCESTER, Mass. – Four Raiders scored in double figures and Colgate pulled away in the second half to complete the weekend sweep of Holy Cross with a 78-60 victory on Sunday at the Hart Center.

Nelly Cummings led the Raiders offensively with 19 points. Jordan Burns netted 18 to go with five rebounds and Jack Ferguson finished with 12. Jeff Woodward was the fourth Raider in double figures with 10 points, plus he grabbed nine boards and swatted three balls.

After racing out to a double-digit lead on Saturday, Colgate's shots weren't falling early on Sunday. The Raiders trailed for the first time all weekend when Judson Martindale's 3-pointer gave Holy Cross an 11-9 edge.

It didn't last long after Burns scored eight straight points and Ferguson drained back-to-back 3-pointers in a 14-2 run to quickly push Colgate's lead to 25-15.

Ferguson rattled home another trey later in the half to keep the Raiders in front 30-23. A 3-pointer on the other end from Austin Butler cut Colgate's lead to four and that was the margin at the half after Burns drove inside for a layup to pull in front 36-32 at the break.

The Raider lead was trimmed down to 40-37 before Cummings and Tucker Richardson keyed a 10-3 run with back-to-back triples six minutes into the second half. It was still a 10-point game after an Oliver Lynch-Daniels layup made it 60-50 with just under eight minutes left.

Holy Cross was hanging around until Colgate finally put the game away with 16-4 blitz that chewed over five minutes on the clock. Woodward and Ferguson both converted three-point plays and Richardson drained a corner trey to turn a 10-point lead into a 74-54 margin.

Colgate connected on 6-of-10 from the field during that stretch with no turnovers. Five different players contributed to the run, led by Richardson with five points.

Cummings fittingly closed the game with a pair of free throws and Colgate cruised to the 78-60 triumph.

From the Source
Head Coach Matt Langel

On the game:
"Four straight games against the same opponent is challenging. This game was just as important as every other one that we've played so we can put ourselves in the best position in our division. We were confident that Holy Cross was going to fight like crazy and I was pleased with the way we matched their intensity. When the offense wasn't clicking we did enough on defense to get a lead and then hold the lead. We eventually were able to pull away in the second half."

Key Stats of the Game
Colgate won the battle in the paint 34-24 and the Raider reserves outscored Holy Cross' bench 27-20. Colgate held the Crusaders' leading scorer Gerrale Gates to one point in the second half after scoring 16 in the first half.

Notes
Nelly Cummings was Colgate's fourth different leading scorer in the last four games.
Jeff Woodward's nine rebounds and three blocks were both career-best marks.
Tucker Richardson led the Raiders with a +41 efficiency rating on the weekend.
