Late Comeback Falls Short at Loyola

Rayman Scores Season-high 27 Points in 84-80 Defeat

BALTIMORE – Will Rayman scored a season-high 27 points and Rapolas Ivanauskas posted a double-double but it was not enough in an 84-80 loss to Loyola on Sunday at Reitz Arena.

The loss snaps Colgate's four-game win streak and brings its Patriot League lead back to one. The Raiders will wrap up the regular season with three of their last four in Hamilton.

Loyola (13-14, 5-9 Patriot) raced out to an early 11-2 lead and never looked back after a 3-pointer from Isaiah Hart four minutes into the game. The Greyhounds kept their pace and grabbed a 17-7 advantage on a pair of layups by Scott KaVaughn at the 14-minute mark.

Colgate (20-7, 11-3 Patriot) finally got into a rhythm after Rayman and Tucker Richardson drained back-to-back 3-pointers. Another battling layup inside for Rayman brought the Raiders within 22-21, but Loyola shot back with a 14-2 run to open its lead to double digits.

Greyhounds freshman Santi Aldama, playing in his fifth career game, crushed Colgate's momentum with a trio of 3-pointers down the stretch. Loyola led by as many as 17 points in the first half,  but a fast break layup by Richardson and 3-pointer at the buzzer by Jordan Burns brought Colgate within 43-31 at the break.

Ivanauskas scored the first seven points of the second half, with a pair of layups and a trey capping a 12-0 run that trimmed the deficit to 43-38 less than three minutes into the second half. But Aldama buried back-to-back 3-pointers, one being an and-one in a four-point play, in an 8-0 response to give the Greyhounds a 50-38 advantage seven minutes into the frame.

The Raiders could not get closer than seven points until there were two minutes left. Cam Spencer, another freshman who did not play against Colgate in the first meeting, connected on three 3-pointers in the second half to keep the lead in double figures 73-63.

Freshmen Aldama and Spencer combined for 35 points and nine of Loyola's 11 3-pointers.

The final four minutes belonged to the Raiders, but it was too little too late. Rayman rattled home a 3-pointer to make it 81-78 with 35 seconds left, and then he got a layup to fall with four seconds left to cut the deficit to 82-80, but Loyola held on for the upset victory, 84-80.

QUOTES
Head Coach Matt Langel
On the game:
"Loyola is a really good team. We picked them toward the top of the league in the preseason. They had a good returning group and their freshmen were very well thought of coming in. You can see why. Santi Aldama and Cam Spencer were at least the difference in this game today. Their coaches do a great job with their team and they are playing as good as anybody in our league right now.

"We had a week off with no games and it showed. We got ourselves way behind on the road against a good team and that is hard to come back from. We have to get back to the drawing board. It's one loss, we are still positioned where we would like to be. If we keep getting better and learning, then we have a great chance of closing out the regular season on a good note."

On the keys to bouncing back Wednesday:
"You prepare well, accept coaching, respect the game, and work your tail off. The recipe does not change based on results. To our guys' credit, most of the time we have been in this situation we have responded well. It speaks to their character individually and collectively."
