LEWISBURG, Pa. – Meghan Romero and
Jordan Miller led Colgate with a pair of three-run homers in a strong offensive showing, but Bucknell survived to take both ends of Sunday's doubleheader and sweep the weekend series at Becker Field.
Bucknell 10, Colgate 8
Rebecca Johnson started the opener off with an infield single and Romero followed with a long single near the warning track in right field. After the next two outs were recorded, Miller sliced a base hit to shallow right to score Johnson and get Colgate on the board early.
Bucknell answered back to score two runs in the home half of the first. Allyse Volpe was hit by a pitch and Lauren Hadley walked before coming around to score on a two-run double by Anna Gimmestad.
The Raiders countered with three more runs off the bat of Romero in the top of the second.
Lauren La Terra opened the inning with a double off the wall in right center and Johnson worked a walk before Romero brought everybody home on a three-run bomb to dead centerfield.
Colgate's lead would not last. Bucknell scored one run in the third and plated six runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth, capped off by back-to-back RBI singles from Nicole Rivait and Volpe, to put the Bison in control, 9-4.
Morgan Farrah kept the Raider bats alive with a double in the top of the fifth.
Virginia Irby traded places with her with an RBI double to right center to cut the Bison lead to 9-5.
Bucknell added an important insurance run in the sixth before Colgate mounted a seventh-inning rally to close the gap. A Farrah walk and Irby single set the stage for Miller, who hammered another three-run homer to close the deficit to 10-8.
Lauren Lichtenwalner worked out of the jam to get the final two outs and Bucknell hung on to clinch the series, 10-8.
Bucknell 9, Colgate 1 (Five Innings)
The Bison powered their way to the series sweep with five home runs from four different players over the first four innings of the night cap.
Sarah Baluch added an RBI single through the right side in the home half of the fourth to give Bucknell a 9-0 advantage.
Three straight two-out hits in the fifth put Colgate on the board.
Madison Aston rocked a pinch-hit double to deep center and Johnson drove her home on a single through the right side.
Romero roped a single into left to advance Johnson into scoring position, but Colgate could not extend the game as Bucknell buckled down to get the final out of the inning and secure the five-inning victory, 9-1.
Gimmestad led the Bison offensively with two home runs and five RBI. She finished the series 7-for-9 (.778) at the plate with nine RBI.
