Colgate Downs George Mason in DH Split

Miller Continues Hot Start with Five Hits, Five RBI in Doubleheader Split

FAIRFAX, Va. – After falling to Albany 9-7 in the bottom of the seventh of game 1, Colgate bounced back to defeat George Mason 5-2 in game 2 and salvage a doubleheader split on Saturday at the GMU Softball Complex.

With the split, Colgate moved to 6-5 on the season. Albany improved to 2-4 with its win, while George Mason fell to 3-7 with the loss.

Game 1: Albany 9, Colgate 7

Colgate wasted little time jumping on Albany with four runs in the top of the first. Rebecca Johnson opened the game with a walk and Morgan Farrah brought her home two batters later on an RBI double to left field.

Reigning Patriot League Player of the Week Jordan Miller picked up right where she left off last week with an RBI double as the first of three straight two-out hits. Nicole Rounsavill and Baillie Jorth followed with RBI singles to extend Colgate's lead to 4-0.

After Albany scored single single runs in the first and third innings to cut the lead in half, Meghan Romero laced a single up the middle to score McKenna Saunders in the top of the fourth.

The Raiders padded their lead with two more runs on four hits in the fifth, capped by an RBI single from Johnson, to take a 7-2 lead into the sixth.

Albany cut the deficit to 7-4 on a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and continued to rally in the seventh. After an out to start the frame, five straight Great Danes reached base safely.

Amelia Ely tied the game at 7-7 on a sacrifice fly and Mariah Miramontez ended it with a two-out, walk-off triple to score two runs and give Albany the 9-7 victory.

Kaitlyn Borruso started in the circle for the Raiders and tossed five strong innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in the no-decision.

Game 2: Colgate 5, George Mason 2

Colgate bounced back in the night cap and scored two runs in the top of the first. Miller set the tone with a two-run single, scoring Virginia Irby and Farrah, to give the Raiders the only lead they needed behind a complete-game effort from Bella Crow in the circle.

Crow fanned a season-high six batters and allowed two runs on nine hits over seven innings to improve to 2-4 on the season.

George Mason got a run back in the bottom of the second, but the Raiders tacked on three insurance runs in the fifth to pull away for good.

After Johnson and Farrah reached base on singles, Miller brought both runners home on a two-RBI double to left to stretch the Raiders' lead to 5-1.

The Patriots scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Crow capped her complete game with a groundout to secure the 5-2 victory for the Raiders.
