BUFFALO, N.Y. – Canisius held the Colgate offense in check Saturday afternoon and scored an 8-6 nonconference victory over the No. 19 Raiders.
Senior goalkeeper Brad Nordstrom was the hero for the Golden Griffins. A graduate transfer from Fairfield, Nordstrom posted a season-high 16 saves to deny the Raiders time and again.
Six different Colgate scorers found the net but the Raiders could muster only single goals in the final three periods. Colgate led 4-2 late in the second quarter before allowing two goals in the last two minutes of the half to swing the momentum.
Colgate goal scorers were, in order,
Mike Hawkins,
Brian Minicus and
James Caddigan in the first quarter;
Duncan Hoskinson in the second;
Nicky Petkevich in the third and then
Matt Donovan with 7:17 left in the fourth to give the Raiders hope for a late rally.
But it wasn't to be and Canisius posted its first victory over Colgate in 15 meetings.
Sam Cleveland had a pair of assists for Colgate, giving him eight for the season and 71 for his career. That ties him for fifth on the all-time Raider chart.

Colgate head coach Matt Karweck: (On the game) "My initial feelings about the game were that we got dominated in the ground ball battle, didn't shoot well and made critical errors in the clearing game.
"However, I was wrong. We dominated that game in so many ways. We guarded them really well, we rode the ball really well, we actually moved the ball and got great opportunities. I'm proud of our guys in the execution of the game plan. We need to shoot more against live goalies.
"My hat is off to the Canisius staff and how they prepared their goalie. He had a phenomenal day with 16 saves, and we missed the goal a bunch as well. The good news is we have a game against a very good Hobart team coming on Tuesday. We win and learn, and we lose and learn."
