CLEARWATER, Fla. – A pitchers' duel followed by an old-fashion Florida beat down sparked Colgate to a doubleheader sweep Friday.
Bella Crow hurled a two-hitter and
Morgan Farrah singled the winning run across in a 2-1 victory over Brown. Colgate then pounded out 12 hits in just five innings for a 10-2 thumping of Quinnipiac.
The Raiders improved to 10-11 and get a chance at climbing back over .500 Saturday with games against Providence and Florida A&M.
Colgate 2, Brown 1
Crow allowed only a second-inning unearned run in posting her third straight victory when going the distance. The right-hander allowed two hits, struck out two and scattered three walks.
Five Raiders had one hit apiece, but it was a three-hit inning in the top of the fifth that proved the difference.
Colgate jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second.
Nicole Rounsavill ripped a one-out double and scored one out later when
Mia Guevarra's grounder to shortstop was booted. The Bears tied it immediately with their own unearned tally in the bottom of the second.
In the fifth, Colgate's Guevarra and
Rebecca Johnson opened the inning with consecutive singles. After
Virginia Irby lined into a double play,
Meghan Romero walked to put runners at the corners. That's when Farrah stroked a single to left that scored Guevarra for the 2-1 Raiders lead.
Crow made it stand from there, allowing just one hit and one walk over the final three innings. She's now 5-4 with a 3.17 ERA.
Brown is now 4-4.
Colgate 10, Quinnipiac 2
In Game 2, Colgate scored a season-high 10 runs to easily dispatch Quinnipiac.
Romero was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in, while Farrah contributed a 2-for-4 performance with a pair of RBIs and
Jordan Miller was 2-for-2 with three runs scored.
Colgate scored in four of its five at bats, highlighted by a four-run second and a three-run fifth that halted the game via the eight-run rule.
Jessica Hay picked up the victory, her fourth of the year. She scattered one run and six hits over 4 and 1-3 innings, striking out two.
Rounsavill had an RBI-double and Guevarra a run-scoring single in the first that put the Raiders in front for keeps, 2-1. Irby and Farrah contributed RBI-singles in the fourth-run second, while Romero added an RBI-double.
After the Raiders picked up an unearned run in the third and then didn't score in the fourth, Colgate put the game away with three in the fifth.
The first two Colgate batters were retired but then seven straight Raiders reached. Miller walked and
Madison Aston singled to begin the rally, and then Farrah ended it with her run-scoring single.
