CLEARWATER, Fla. – Colgate bounced back from an opening loss Wednesday with a solid 7-6 victory over Quinnipiac later in the day to split a pair of games in Florida.
The Raiders got off to a quick start in Game 2 with a run in each of the first two innings.
Virginia Irby worked a leadoff walk and scored one batter later on an RBI double by
Meghan Romero.
The Raiders added to their lead after
Mia Guevarra belted a double and scored on an error in the second inning. Guevarra scored again on a two-run single by
Rebecca Johnson that extended Colgate's lead to 4-1 in the fourth.
Quinnipiac worked all the back to tie the game with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth, but the Raiders shot right back with three runs in the sixth to pull away.
Romero drove in two runs with a double and scored one batter later on an RBI single by
Morgan Farrah to push Colgate's lead to 7-4.
The Bobcats battled back to score two runs in the seventh and had the tying run in scoring position, but
Kaitlyn Borruso induced a game-ending groundout to secure the 7-6 victory in the night cap.
Game 1
Colgate dropped the opening game Wednesday 3-1 to Providence.
The Raiders trailed 2-0 in the last of the sixth when Romero singled with one out. Pinch-runner
Cayman Coughlin moved to second on a single by Farrah and then moved to third on an Irby base-knock.
The run came home on
Baillie Jorth's pinch-ground out. Nicole Rounsavil followed with a walk to reload the bases, but then
Lauren La Terra's fly to right was caught to end the threat.
The Raiders then went 1-2-3 in the seventh.
Borruso took the loss for Colgate and Irby had the only multihit game.
Colgate returns to action here Friday morning in another split doubleheader against Brown and Quinnipiac.
