Softball Walks Off to Complete DH Sweep

Miller's Six Hits, Hay's Seven Scoreless Frames Lead Raiders to Two Wins

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Jordan Miller roped a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh to lead Colgate to a comeback 2-1 victory over Middle Tennessee and a doubleheader sweep after the Raiders took down Georgetown 5-0 in the opening game Friday.

With the two wins, Colgate extended its winning streak to three straight games and improved to 3-3 on the season. Georgetown fell to 2-8 and Middle Tennessee dropped to 5-7 with the losses.

Game 1: Colgate 5, Georgetown 0

Miller finished 3-for-3 and reached base all four times in the opener with a home run, two singles, and a walk to go with an RBI and a run scored. Virginia Irby drove in a pair and scored a run with a home run and a double. Meghan Romero and Rebecca Johnson each finished with two hits to lead the Raiders offensively.

Colgate opened the game with fireworks in the top of the first. Morgan Farrah worked a two-out walk, and then back-to-back home runs from Irby and Miller gave the Raiders a 3-0 lead before Georgetown had a chance to bat.

Bella Crow got the nod in the circle and tossed two scoreless innings to start. She stranded the bases loaded in each of the first two frames, highlighted by an inning-ending strikeout to the Hoyas' No. 2 batter in the second.

Colgate added single insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to close the game out. Nicole Rounsavill lifted a sacrifice fly to score McKenna Saunders and Farrah plated Johnson with an RBI groundout in the sixth to cap the scoring.

Jessica Hay relieved Crow in the third and fired five strong innings to complete the shutout. She picked up her second win of the season allowing just two hits with two strikeouts over five scoreless frames.

Game 2: Colgate 2, Middle Tennessee 1

Middle Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI single by Lani Rodriguez. The Blue Raiders clung to their one-run lead until Colgate rallied in the final two innings to steal the win.

Miller led off the sixth with a single to right center. Saunders pinch-ran for Miller and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Rounsavill. With two strikes at the plate, Cayman Coughlin came through with an RBI single through the right side to knot the score at 1-1.

The Raiders were poised for more with the bases loaded, but a flyout ended the threat and kept the score at 1-1 heading to the last inning. Hay set the stage for the Raiders with a 1-2-3 top of the seventh.

Farrah reached on an error and advanced to second on the throw to start the bottom half. Madison Aston entered as a pinch-runner and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Irby, before Miller walked it off with a single through the left side on the first pitch she saw to cap the comeback, 2-1.

Kaitlyn Borruso started on the mound and allowed one run on six hits with three walks and a strikeout over 4 2/3 innings. Hay picked up her second win of the day in relief, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts over the final 2 1/3 innings.

FROM THE SOURCE
• Colgate head coach Marissa Lamison-Myers:

"Our entire team contributed to both wins today. We came up with big hits from both the top and bottom of our line up. Jordan was a force at the plate and with the game on the line she was the right person in the right spot. Jessica was a work horse on the mound and made it possible to keep us in the game even when the other team was threatening."
