Raiders Handle Binghamton 16-10

Petkevich Four Goals; Cleveland, Brown Hat Tricks

VESTAL, N.Y. – No. 18 Colgate avoided a letdown, fought through an early deficit and posted a comfortable 16-10 victory over Binghamton.

The Saturday win came eight days after the Raiders had opened their 2019 season with a road triumph at then No. 10 Syracuse. Binghamton was playing its first game this year but Colgate was ready for all that the Bearcats offered.

Nicky Petkevich matched his first game with another four-goal effort, while Sam Cleveland and Griffin Brown added hat tricks. Cleveland pitched in two assists and Petkevich one for a pair of five-point games.

Malcolm Feeney had a career day at the faceoff-X, winning 14-of-19 and boosting the Raiders to an overall 18-of-28 result. Feeney added eight ground balls for another career high.

First collegiate goals went to sophomore midfielder Nick Salameda and first-year attackman Brian Minicus in the third quarter, and junior attackman Jesse Rosenblatt in the fourth.

37952Tied 4-4 after one quarter, Colgate put five on the board in the second quarter. Brown scored twice, Cleveland twice and then Petkevich found the netting just five seconds before the break to make it 9-5 Raiders at intermission.

A 5-1 third quarter with goals from five different Raiders put the game out of reach at 14-6, and Colgate coasted from there.

Bottom Line
No. 18 Colgate 16, Binghamton 10.

From the Source
37954• Colgate head coach Matt Karweck: (On the game) "Binghamton came at us from the start and I was curious to see how the guys would react. But we did a great job of not trying to do too much, and then we did really well mixing it up. Offensively, we moved the ball. I like how we are firing that ball around and showing great ball movement. When we do that, we are a good team. One thing that needs some work is our transition game. Right now, that's just OK.

"The key today was we didn't panic when they went ahead and we believed in ourselves. We also played well enough that we were able to get a look at a lot of guys in the fourth quarter who don't normally see much playing time. That helps us begin to prepare for Maryland."
