Colgate Skates to 1-1 Tie With Ohio State

Late Buckeye Goal Keeps Raiders Out of WIn Column

HAMILTON - Colgate looked to bounce back from a tough Friday night loss and regain momentum before getting back into ECAC play.

The Raiders saw two power play opportunities in the first period and made good on one of them. The home team took an early lead after Sammy Smigliani converted on a golden opportunity in front of the net with Buckeye net minder Andrea Braendli out of position.

The second period was largely a stalemate with power play chances on both sides, but both penalty kill units unwilling to budge. Liz Auby recorded 10 saves in the second to preserve Colgate's 1-0 lead into the second intermission.

With 7:20 remaining in the series finale, the Buckeyes got on the board after a scramble in front of the Colgate goal. Ohio State applied even more pressure in the final minutes of regulation when Tanner Gates was sent to the box. Colgate, as it typically has done this season, killed the penalty and returned Gates with no damage done. 60 minutes would prove to be insufficient in deciding a winner.

Colgate was gifted a power play chance midway through the overtime period, but were unable to make it count and claim a win. In an overtime period that featured only one shot on goal, both defenses stood tall.

Colgate moves to 8-6-3 on the season and 6-2-2 at home.

From the Source

Head Coach Greg Fargo on Sammy Smigliani's goal

  • "We were having a tough time getting set up. I have to give our power play a lot credit, they stuck with it, got a shot to the net on a good screen, it was a great way for us to start the game."

On tonight's bounce back performance
  • "I'm really proud of our team and the way they responded. We did some great work this morning to get ready to rebound. It wasn't a perfect game by us, but perfection wasn't the goal. They played hard for each other, like a team. The game could have gone either way; they had some chances and Liz was up to the challenge as did we. I was pleased with how hard we played and how committed we were to playing the right way."
