BALTIMORE – Will Rayman tied the game with a layup as time expired in regulation but Loyola scored nine of the final 11 points in overtime to hold on for a 79-72 victory over the Colgate men's basketball team Saturday afternoon at Reitz Arena.
Four Raiders finished in double figures.
Dana Batt tied his career high with 18 points to lead Colgate on the offensive end.
Rapolas Ivanauskas recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Rayman and
Malcolm Regisford each finished with 12 points.
Loyola had the ball with 26 seconds left in regulation and a 68-66 advantage. Batt flipped the script by drawing an offensive foul in the paint to give the Raiders another crack on offense in a one-possession game. After a near turnover,
Francisco Amiel dove in a scrum to force a jump ball and keep possession in the Raiders' favor with 1.2 seconds left.
With an inbound pass under the basket,
Tucker Richardson found Rayman inside for the game-tying layup as time expired. There was a brief review before the play stood to send the game to overtime at 68-68.
Ivanauskas sank a pair of free throws to knot the game at 70-70 early in overtime. That stood for nearly three minutes until the Greyounds went on to score nine of the last 11 points over the final 1:39 to come away with the 79-72 victory.
This was the fourth game in the last eight head-to-head matchups to go to overtime. The loss snaps the Raiders' five-game winning streak against Loyola, their longest against any Patriot League foe.
Ivanauskas opened the scoring with a drive in the lane but the Raiders went silent for over four minutes after that and Loyola built an early 6-2 lead at the 15-minute mark of the first half.
Loyola's lead remained at four points until Richardson set up Regisford for an open slam to start seven straight points for the Raiders. A 3-pointer from Ivanauskas preceded a layup in the lane for Rayman and Colgate had its first lead since the opening minute at 14-13.
Rayman's first 3-pointer with just under seven minutes left in the half momentarily gave the Raiders a 22-21 lead, but five straight points for the Greyhounds gave the home team a 26-22 advantage at the five-minute mark.
Richardson drained a trey from the wing to keep it a four-point game at 31-27, and the Greyhounds stayed in front by four until a Rayman dunk in the final seconds sent the Raiders to the locker room down by two, 33-31.
Colgate turned it on early in the second half and jumped out to a three-point lead 42-39 after back-to-back buckets in the paint for Batt. After a layup from Loyola's Kenneth Jones on the other end, Ivanauskas converted a traditional three-point play to push the Raiders back on top by four, 45-41.
The Raider lead reached eight at the 12-minute mark after baskets in the lane for Regisford and Ivanauskas. A corner 3-pointer from
Jack Ferguson extended Colgate's lead to a game-high nine points 54-45 at the midway point of the half.
Loyola worked its way back into the game with an 8-2 run, led by a pair of 3-pointers from Jones, to close the gap to three points at 56-53. After a pair of free throws from Regisford, Jones hit another trey and Colgate's lead was down to two points at 58-56 with just over seven minutes left.
The Greyhounds continued to hit shots from distance and climbed in front 61-60 on a layup from Scott KaVaughn with five and a half minutes left. Both teams traded buckets over the next three minutes and Loyola held a 68-66 lead with just over a minute left.
Each team had a possession with it a two-point game until Rayman sent it to overtime with a reviewed layup as time expired.
BOTTOM LINE
• Loyola 79, Colgate 72 (OT)
RECORD UPDATES
• Colgate dropped to 12-9 overall and 4-4 in league play after the loss.
• Loyola is now 8-13 on the season and 4-4 in league action with its third overtime win in the last four games.
FROM THE SOURCE
• Colgate head coach
Matt Langel:
Final reaction: "Credit to Loyola. Coach Tavaras has them playing hard and really scrapping at both ends of the court. With that said, the sentiment from our locker room was that we let one get away today. 20 turnovers for us and 14 offensive rebounds for them makes it hard for us to win any game, let alone one on the road."
Positive outlook: "We finished with a great field goal percentage today. That's usually a sign of getting the shots you want your team taking. The problem was that we did not get enough of them because the turnovers hampered our offense."
Looking ahead: "In basketball, you never know what type of personality each game will have but we will certainly need to be prepared for an Army team that has been playing very well. I also know we will need to do a better job on Tommy Funk than we did last time and take good care of the ball to not turn it over as often as we did in that game at West Point."
