Raiders Unable to Contain Army in Road Loss

Burns Scores 22, Three Raiders Reach Double Figures

WEST POINT, N.Y. – A big run in each half propelled Army past the Colgate men's basketball team 91-81 Wednesday night at Christl Arena.

Colgate and Army went basket for basket throughout the first half until the Black Knights caught fire with a 13-0 run to turn a seven-point deficit into a four-point halftime lead. The Raiders battled back to tie the game in the second half, but 14 straight points from Army put the nail in the coffin down the stretch.

The Raiders came out strong and jumped out to an early 9-6 lead thanks to five points from Will Rayman. Army eventually claimed a 26-25 lead on a 3-pointer from John Emezie but Francisco Amiel responded with a trey of his own to put the Raiders back in front 28-26 midway through the half. His first of two shots from beyond the arc sparked Colgate to a seven-point lead, its largest of the night, at 39-32 with just 4:34 left in the half.

The lead did not stand, however, as Army responded with a 13-0 scoring spurt to take control before intermission. Tommy Funk paced the Black Knights' charge with nine of those points and Army knocked down three consecutive 3-pointers over that stretch.

A layup from Jordan Burns ended the drought but not before Army had built a 45-41 lead at the half.

Colgate and Army traded baskets early in the second half before a 3-pointer from Rapolas Ivanauskas knotted things up at 54-54 just over five minutes into the frame. The Black Knights countered with a 14-0 rampage over nearly four minutes to take a 68-54 lead.

Back-to-back treys from Rayman and Ivanauskas made it a seven-point contest at 77-70, but Army refused to give in and hit eight of its final 10 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

BOTTOM LINE
• Army 91, Colgate 81

RECORD UPDATES
• Colgate dropped to 10-8 overall and 2-3 in Patriot League play with the loss.
• Army improved to 8-10 on the season and 3-2 in league action with the win.
• The Raiders fell to 0-3 in league games on the road this season.

FROM THE SOURCE
• Colgate head coach Matt Langel:

Final Thoughts: "Winning on the road in conference play is hard to do. Offensively, we had a fine game tonight. We had a few too many turnovers in the second half but you have to give credit to Army and their intensity. Defensively, though, it's tough to win games when we allow Army to shoot nearly 60 percent from the floor and better than 50 percent from 3-point range. We have to be better."

Looking Ahead: "We have to stay together as a group and play for one another. It will be a different type of game on Saturday. Boston University has a good lineup and they shoot the ball well. We will have to play better than we did tonight on both ends of the court."
