SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Ryan Krueger's second goal of the season gave Colgate a second-half lead, but Syracuse tied the match late in regulation and the two intrastate rivals played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw Monday night at SU Soccer Stadium.
Colgate controlled possession in the early portion of the opening half and came away with a pair of scoring opportunities. After an Orange foul outside of the box on the right side,
Will Stroud twirled a long free kick just wide on the left side for the Raiders' first shot of the contest in the 13th minute.
Oliver Harris nearly got Colgate on the board in the 19th minute when
Kentaro Morrison sent a cross into the box on a deep set piece from 35 yards out. Morrison's pass soared through a scrum in front and Harris lunged out to redirect the ball on goal but it was snagged by Syracuse keeper Hendrik Hilpert just before it crossed the goal line.
The Orange picked up offensive pressure in the later stages of the half. Ryan Raposo connected on a cross from point blank in the 22nd minute but his shot sailed high over the goal. In the 28th minute, Syracuse brought numbers up into the box on a corner kick, but
Jacob Harris battled through a heavy dose of Orange in front to knock the centering pass out towards midfield. Â
Â
Harris made another one of his three first-half saves on a header by Tajon Buchanan with less than three minutes left to send the match to halftime with the score still deadlocked at 0-0.
Â
After a back-and-forth start to the second half, Colgate broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the 69th minute. Stroud corralled a loose ball after
Abdel Sanogo had a shot blocked on the right wing. Stroud spun a perfect cross towards the left wing and
Lucas Lezcano sent a header back in front of the net. Krueger one-timed the header off the crossbar, forcing Hilpert to leave his feet. The initial shot caromed off the crossbar directly back to Krueger, who hammered home his own rebound to the empty net and the Raiders were leading 1-0.Â
Â
Syracuse answered quickly with the equalizer in the 77th minute. The Orange picked up their pressure offensively and Colgate was called for a foul to set up a free kick for Hugo Delhommelle from 30 yards out. Delhommelle went for it all with a low cross towards the right post, where Sondre Norheim redirected it with a header past the outstretched arms of Harris to tie the match at 1-1.
Â
Colgate responded with a couple offensive threats in the final 10 minutes, highlighted by a turnaround shot by
Christian Clarke in the 86th minute. Clarke spun around a defender in front and hammered a shot that was deflected off the right post. The shot ricocheted off the pipe and rolled on the goal line before Hilpert smothered it and the match was sent to overtime.Â
Both teams generated opportunities in the extra periods, but neither side could net the game-winner. Krueger nearly scored his second of the match in the 108th minute, but his shot trickled just wide of the right post as the match finished in a 1-1 draw.Â
