HAMILTON – On a warm morning on Tyler's Field, the Colgate field hockey program opened Patriot League play against Bucknell. Despite a combined seven total saves by goalkeepers
Anna Unger and
Emma Goldberg, paired with a defensive save by
Katie Anderson, the Raiders fell to Bucknell 6-0 in the conference opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half featured a back-and-forth play in early in the game, before Bucknell went up 1-0 off of a corner shot. In the final minutes of the first half, the Bison built their lead to 2-0 off another corner opportunity, before a tallying a cross pass in front of the goal with just 34 seconds before halftime.
The Raider offense posted five total shots on goal in the opening half, with two falling on net by sophomore
Blair Boyles and freshman
Olivia Krogermeier. The second half also featured a scoring opportunity by junior
Remi Filippini, but was stifled by the Bucknell defense. Ultimately, the Bison were able to tally another three goals in the second half in quick succession late in the half, to claim a 6-0 win over the Raiders.
STATISTICAL STANDOUTS
• The standout play of the game came when sophomore
Katie Anderson made a defensive save on a Bucknell shot on goal with just 22:17 remaining in the game, preventing the Bison from increasing their lead. A native of Greene, New York, Anderson was about to protect the net on a shot that was headed to the lower right corner of the goal, but she was able to get in with a stick save for the Raiders.
• Sophomore goalkeeper
Emma Goldberg made her second straight appearance in goal when she came in for 15:57 of action against Bucknell. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Goldberg was able to stop four Bucknell advances for four saves on the day and no goals against for the Raiders.
• On the day, the Raiders tallied three shots on goal by
Olivia Krogermeier,
Remi Filippini, and
Blair Boyles. Overall, Colgate's offense peppered the net with six total shots.
COACH CORNELL'S TAKE
"Today we started exceptionally well and we focused on our game plan. As the game progressed, we broke down defensively where we needed to continue to play with composure and discipline. I am happy with the opportunities we created on attack. Our focus will continue to be protecting our defensive circle and not giving up defensive corners."
