Holland, Wheeler Sweep Patriot Awards

Wheeler Named College Sports Madness National Defensive Player of the Week; Raiders 25th in AFCA Poll

Patriot League Release

HAMILTON –
Colgate's James Holland Jr., and Nick Wheeler were double winners in this week's Patriot League Player of the Week sweepstakes after Saturday's 10-3 takedown of then-No. 20 New Hampshire.

Patriot League voters selected the pair for the offensive and defensive award winners, and College Sports Madness did the same. Wheeler also earned College Sports Madness National Defensive Player of the Week status, while STATS FCS picked him for honorable mention in that same category.

Wheeler had quite the game, posting three sacks to match his career high as Colgate limited the Wildcats to 73 rushing yards and their lowest home-field point total since 2010. The junior from St. Louis just missed a career high with 10 total tackles and finished with 3½ tackles-for-loss and one pass deflection.

One highlight was Wheeler's strip-sack and recovery on fourth down early in the final quarter. He swept around left end, batted the ball out of UNH quarterback Christian Lupoli's hands and promptly fell on the pigskin to thwart a Wildcat drive.

Holland took home offensive honors after rushing 18 times for 104 yards, a 5.8-yard average. Those numbers pushed him over the 2,000-yard mark for his career – the 21st Raider to reach that milestone.

The senior from Royal Palm Beach, Florida, is up to 2,096 yards for his career, good for 17th on Colgate's all-time list. Holland passed four Raiders during Saturday's game, with Alan Egler (1948-50) next on the list at 2,179.

Poll Position
Furman and New Hampshire dropped out and South Dakota and Colgate took their places in this week's AFCA FCS Coaches' Poll. The Raiders, of course, knocked off New Hampshire 10-3 Saturday in Durham, and they head to South Carolina this Saturday for a matchup against Furman. Here's the complete AFCA Coaches' Poll.

The Raiders are sporting a top 25 ranking for the first time since early in the 2016 season and are 2-0 for the first time since 2009. Kickoff Saturday is 1 p.m.
