Raiders Battle Back to Top LIU Brooklyn, 2-1

Mulroy, Krogermeier Score in Second Half Surge

HAMILTON – The Colgate field hockey team scored two unanswered goals in the second half to defeat LIU Brooklyn, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Tyler's Field.

Colgate held an impressive 11-0 shots advantage at the end of the first half. The Raiders dominated possession and came away with several opportunities but six saves from LIU Brooklyn keeper Molly Jannell kept the match scoreless at the half.

Despite the offensive dominance, LIU Brooklyn drew first blood early in the second half after converting on a penalty corner. Jenna Chrobolowski took the corner and raced in front of the goal mouth to deflect the centering shot from Eva Van Wakeren past Colgate keeper Anna Unger to give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute.

LIU Brooklyn's lead was short-lived as Colgate responded just over a minute later. Following the goal, the Raiders immediately took the ball down into LIU territory and from just inside the shooting circle Nora Mulroy spun around to crank a high shot over the pads of Jannell to level the score at 1-1 in the 43rd minute.

The Raiders continued to pressure offensively and eventually netted what proved to be the game-winning goal with less than 10 minutes left in regulation. Off a corner from Maggie Lake, Taylor Casamassa quickly sent a pass to Olivia Krogermeier at the top of the shooting circle, where Krogermeier fired a shot through traffic and it was deflected high in the air and crossed the goal line just out of reach of Jannell to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead.

The Blackbirds did not go away easily, earning a couple of great chances late after pulling their goalie for an extra attacker. Unger was up to the task, though, making two spectacular saves in the final five minutes of regulation to secure the victory for Colgate.

Coach's Take
• Colgate head coach April Cornell: "I think we came out ready to compete right from the start and we kept up that intensity for an entire 70 minutes. We are putting a lot of pressure on our opponents and the next phase of our game is to execute on those opportunities. Once again, we were able to substitute a lot of girls in and out and to be able to give them more experience, especially this time of year, will be very important for us throughout the season. Monday is a quick turnaround for us and we have to make sure we are prepared both mentally and physically."

• Colgate assistant coach Ayla Halus on Raiders defense: "Our defense is off to a great start this season. It helps when our offense is clicking the way it has been, but we've been working hard and staying focused as a group on communication. We have been aggressive at times and stepped up when needed. Anna Unger has been a great leader in the cage for us so far.  Our practices have been very competitive and I think that has helped her preparation. She made some big saves for us late in this match."
